Lead Transmission Line Engineer

Join Leidos' dynamic PowerDelivery team in Downtown Chicago (hybrid) as a Lead Transmission Line Engineer. Tackle challenging electric transmission problems for major U.S. utilities on high-voltage (HV) and extra high-voltage (EHV) overhead and underground systems. Thrive in a fast-paced environment where innovation outpaces the status quo.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead design projects applying NESC, ASCE, ACI standards for voltage conversion, new capacity, and infrastructure replacements.
  • Conduct engineering analyses, prepare bidding documents, draft plans/specs, and develop material procurement/construction packages.
  • Review full transmission line designs: PLS-CADD models, foundations, materials, plan/profiles, construction packages.
  • Develop project scopes, budgets, proposals; interface with clients, teams, planning, environmental, permitting, and construction staff.
  • Collaborate in multi-person teams; up to 10-15% travel or client office work possible.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s in civil/mechanical engineering + 8+ years transmission design experience, including 2+ years leadership/mentorship.
  • PE License (or within 6 months).
  • Expert PLS-CADD, POLE; foundation software (LPILE/FAD); MS Office.
  • Team player with independent work ability; strong client communication.

Preferred Qualifications

  • GO95 standards experience.
  • Construction management/support.
  • PLS TOWER, MicroStation, ProjectWise, Mathcad, AutoCAD.

  • Experience reviewing full transmission line designs (PLS-CADD models, foundations, plans) (experience)
  • Knowledge of NESC, ACI, AISC, ASCE codes, construction specs, procurement, schedules (experience)

Responsibilities

  • Serve as lead engineer on HV/EHV overhead and underground transmission projects
  • Apply NESC, ASCE, ACI standards to design voltage conversion, new capacity, and replacement projects
  • Perform engineering analyses and prepare bidding documents, plans, specs, material procurement, construction docs
  • Develop project scopes, budgets, and proposals
  • Interface with clients, project teams, planning, environmental, permitting, and construction personnel
  • Review PLS-CADD models, foundations, materials, plan/profiles, construction packages
