Leidos Gibbs & Cox, a leader in naval architecture and marine engineering, seeks a Mechanical Engineering Intern for our Philadelphia, PA office. Dive into all aspects of ship design, from preliminary concepts to detail engineering, production, and through-life support. Our team spans naval architecture, propulsion, mechanical systems, structural, electrical, and more, delivering fully integrated solutions to complex naval challenges.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop comprehensive understanding of ship design phases, stakeholder involvement (clients, regulatory agencies), and requirements traceability, verification, and validation.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to ensure seamless coordination and production of quality products with configuration control.
  • Progress from studies to detailed calculations, drawings, and designs for various ship types and in-service alterations.
  • Focus on risk reduction, incorporating cutting-edge technology through space, weight, services reservations, and concurrent manufacturing coordination.
  • Prioritize cost-effective innovations: automation to reduce manning, pollution compliance, enhanced safety, and minimized construction, operation, maintenance costs.

Interns gain hands-on experience supporting engineers in their interest areas and beyond, working on real projects across design phases.

Basic Qualifications

  • Pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field from an accredited college/university.
  • Available to work from Philadelphia office up to 3 days/week.
  • Preferred GPA 3.0+.

Responsibilities

  • Gain broad understanding of ship design phases from concept to through-life support
  • Assist in stakeholder involvement, requirements verification, and validation processes
  • Support coordination between engineering disciplines including mechanical, structural, and electrical
  • Contribute to studies, detail design calculations, drawings, and configuration control
  • Work on real tasks for various ship types and alteration packages
  • Incorporate cutting-edge technology for space, weight, and services optimization
  • Identify cost-effective designs reducing manning, pollution, and lifecycle costs
