Job Description

Principal Substation Physical Engineer

Join Leidos, a Top 10 ENR-ranked T&D and Power Firm, as a Principal Substation Physical Engineer in our dynamic Orlando, FL team. Lead high-voltage utility substation projects, collaborating with electric utility disciplines to deliver innovative power delivery solutions for over 50 investor-owned utilities, 160+ municipals/cooperatives, and mobile operators.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute conceptual and detailed HV/MV substation physical design: basic layouts, electrical arrangements, one-line/three-line drawings, plan-sections, grounding, AC/DC systems.
  • Analyze complex technical studies including lighting, grounding, arc flash, AC/DC loads, volt-drop, lightning, and protection.
  • Develop/review technical specifications, drawings, standards, BOMs, and perform QC on medium/large projects.
  • Prepare cost estimates, proposals, and advanced technical presentations for staff development.
  • Mentor junior engineers, manage training, and drive client satisfaction through interactions and site visits.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s in Electrical/Mechanical/Civil Engineering + 12+ years substation physical design.
  • Expertise in utility grid systems and HV/MV design for DC/AC systems, batteries, switchgear, transformers.
  • Equipment sizing, substation construction/commissioning experience.
  • Florida PE license; knowledge of IEEE/ANSI/NERC/FERC.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree; protection/control design knowledge.
  • Rigid bus calculations; WinIGS/CDEGS experience.

  • Experience with HV/MV Physical Electrical Design including DC Systems, Station Service, Battery, AC Panels (experience)
  • Knowledge of IEEE, ANSI, NERC, FERC standards (experience)
  • Registered Florida Professional Engineer (PE) license (experience)

Responsibilities

  • Perform conceptual and detailed HV/MV Substation Physical design including layouts, one-line, three-line drawings, grounding, AC/DC systems
  • Review and execute complex technical studies and project scopes
  • Develop technical specifications, drawings, standards, and bill of materials
  • Conduct Quality Control reviews on medium to large substation projects
  • Perform engineering cost estimates, proposal development, and client interactions including site visits
  • Mentor and train junior engineers with technical presentations
