Job Description

Lead Next-Generation IMS Instruments at Leidos

Leidos Security Enterprise Solutions seeks a Principal System Engineer in Tewksbury, MA, to serve as IMS instrument system lead. Drive sustainment of fielded Ion Mobility Spectrometer instruments and pioneer next-generation IMS/MS analytical tools. Own technical planning, architecture, requirements, and full lifecycle leadership—from concept to fielding.

Core Impact

  • Architect IMS systems, decompose to subsystems, define interfaces/verification.
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams (chemistry, physics, mech/elec eng, firmware/software).
  • Convert customer needs to testable requirements with performance budgets.

Technical Leadership

Conduct trade studies, risk analysis, functional assessments. Provide design guidance ensuring reliability/testability. Orchestrate integration/V&V, resolve cross-domain issues. Maintain baselines, execute changes, mentor teams on rigor.

Basic Qualifications

  • BS in relevant field +12-15 yrs exp (MS +10-13; PhD eligible).
  • Proven IMS/MS instrument leadership from concept to validation.
  • Multidisciplinary collaboration/mentoring experience.
  • Independent problem-solving via data/judgment.
  • Strong communication; US Citizen for clearances.

Preferred Expertise

  • IMS modeling/analysis/optimization.
  • Full lifecycle: reqs→arch→design→V&V→sustain.
  • Instrument control/data workflows with SW teams.
  • Design for reliability/manufacturability/serviceability.

  • Strong IMS/MS development background including theory application to hardware (experience)
  • Multi-disciplinary team leadership and mentoring (experience)
  • US Citizen eligible for public trust/clearances (experience)
  • Excellent communication skills for diverse audiences (experience)

Responsibilities

  • Lead IMS instrument architecture, subsystem decomposition, interfaces, and verification
  • Coordinate science/engineering teams across chemistry, physics, mechanical, electrical, firmware, software
  • Translate mission needs to testable requirements, allocate to subsystems, define interfaces
  • Develop engineering roadmap and technical baseline for development/sustainment
  • Perform functional/timeline analysis, trade studies, risk assessments, requirements traceability
  • Provide design input ensuring performance, reliability, testability
  • Plan/lead integration, test, V&V, troubleshoot issues
  • Manage configuration baselines, change control, engineering changes
  • Mentor engineers, promote engineering rigor and design reviews
  • Collaborate with stakeholders balancing performance, cost, schedule, manufacturability
