Join Leidos Quantum Incubator as Senior Experimental Photonics Scientist

Leidos is seeking a Senior Experimental Photonics Scientist to lead our Quantum Incubator in Arlington, VA. Drive innovation in quantum technologies by overseeing photonic labs, supervising experimental teams, and maturing prototypes from concept to reality. Collaborate with quantum scientists to optimize circuits and secure new contracts through R&D excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor research scientists of all levels.
  • Prioritize experiments with internal stakeholders.
  • Develop lab guidelines, evaluate equipment for quantum optics.
  • Create and execute test plans for device validation.
  • Manage photonic hardware like lasers, spectrum analyzers, micromanipulators.
  • Perform detailed testing at component, subsystem, and system levels.
  • Track advancements in quantum photonics and testing methods.

Basic Qualifications

  • 8-12+ years experience with Bachelor’s in physics/engineering (T4/T5 levels).
  • Photonic PIC probing, optical alignment, insertion loss/spectral analysis.
  • Hands-on lab equipment management.
  • Team leadership, Python/LabVIEW proficiency.
  • Photonic component optimization via simulation.
  • Quantum research background; US citizenship for clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in relevant field.
  • Hybrid nonlinear photonics (TFLN/BTO) experience.
  • Nanophotonic design (Lumerical/COMSOL).
  • Free space optics for quantum apps; fiber probe alignment.
  • Publications, proposal writing, PDKs, nanofabrication.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, guide, and develop a team of research scientists
  • Oversee optical and photonic lab functions and hardware maintenance
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to prioritize research and experiments
  • Develop test plans, execute tests, and create test reports for quantum devices
  • Conduct photonic testing using probing systems and free space optics
  • Benchmark quantum devices and build prototypes
  • Stay current with quantum technologies advancements
