Join Leidos at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL)

Leidos Research Support Team is hiring a Sensor Development Engineer in Pittsburgh, PA, to pioneer wireless sensors for critical infrastructure monitoring. Work alongside world-class scientists using state-of-the-art equipment on basic and applied research projects spanning concept to field demonstration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and optimize SAW devices via simulation for environmental stimuli like gas and corrosion.
  • Partner with materials scientists for sensor fabrication in nanofabrication labs.
  • Perform surface treatments, testing in gas/solution conditions, and characterization with impedance/phase analysis.
  • Develop wireless interrogation systems, DSP algorithms, and secure real-time data protocols using RF/microwave tech.
  • Lead field tests, collaborate multidisciplinary, and publish in top journals while creating IP.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s in EE, engineering physics, ME, materials engineering or related + 2 years experience.
  • Device fabrication/testing expertise, ideally harsh environments.
  • Proficiency in COMSOL/FEA, simulation tools, and lab instruments (VNAs, AWGs, scopes).
  • Programming in Python/LabVIEW/MATLAB; NETL access eligibility.

Preferred Skills

  • PhD; SAW sensor design; MEMS/semiconductor/cleanroom experience.

  • Test and characterize SAW sensors using lab equipment and micromanipulators
  • Develop wireless multi-SAW interrogation and real-time DSP algorithms
  • Implement secure wireless data acquisition and synchronization protocols
  • Plan field demonstrations and deliver presentations at conferences
  • Publish in peer-reviewed journals and generate intellectual property
