Job Description

Join Leidos as a Space Radiation Scientist Supporting NASA’s HHPC

Leidos is seeking an experienced Space Radiation Scientist to join the Space Radiation Analysis Group (SRAG) in Houston, TX. Support critical NASA programs including ISS, Artemis, and Mars missions by assessing astronaut radiation exposures, modeling health risks, and developing mitigation strategies. This role demands expertise in radiation dosimetry, transport modeling, biology, and evidence-based risk assessment to ensure mission success and astronaut safety.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Act as subject matter expert on radiation health risks: cancer, CNS, cardiovascular, acute, and degenerative effects.
  • Manage reviews of radiation health evidence and countermeasure research.
  • Synthesize multidisciplinary findings aligned with NCRP, ICRP, BEIR, UNSCEAR guidelines.
  • Maintain structured literature databases for NASA teams.
  • Translate research into operational risk models and strategies.
  • Conduct exposure analyses for ISS, Artemis, and future missions.

Operational & Communication Duties

  • Create outreach materials on emerging space radiation research.
  • Provide real-time operational guidance during radiation events.
  • Assist in flight rule development for Space Environment Officers.
  • Deliver training on space radiation health risks.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s in Physics, Radiation Health, Medical Physics or related (≥1 year exp.); Ph.D. (≥0.5 years).
  • Experience with HZETRN, GEANT4, FLUKA, MCNP.
  • Knowledge of space radiation dosimetry.
  • U.S. Citizenship/Permanent Residency for Public Trust Clearance.
