Join Leidos Defense Systems as a Sr. Materials and Process Engineer

Leidos delivers innovative solutions for defense, space, cyber, and commercial sectors. Our Defense Systems Sector tackles the world’s toughest security challenges with enterprise IT, intelligence systems, command and control, cybersecurity, and more. The Advanced Materials Department seeks a Sr. Materials and Process Engineer to support critical programs from R&D to manufacturing.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Support material selection, metallurgy, fabrication, composites, ceramics, process improvements, RCCA, PM&P Plans, and qualifications.
  • Mentor junior staff on testing and data review.
  • Provide technical insights for bids and proposals.
  • Investigate non-conformances and resolve issues efficiently.
  • Manage tests, procedures, and customer coordination.
  • Liaise with customers, procurement, and suppliers to meet objectives.
  • Evaluate new suppliers for risk analysis.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s in Materials Engineering/Science, Mechanical Engineering, or Physical Sciences (ABET-accredited) with 8+ years, or Master’s with 6+ years.
  • Expertise in materials processes, selection, metallography.
  • Experience leading M&P and testing for projects (aerospace/defense preferred).
  • US Citizen with DOD Secret Clearance eligibility.
  • On-site in Huntsville, AL (relocation support available).

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced experience in multi-physics modeling, lab experimentation, program management, and defense sector non-conformance resolution.

  • Experience managing M&P and materials testing for aerospace/defense projects (experience)
  • US Citizen with active DOD Secret Clearance or eligibility (experience)
  • Resident of North Alabama or willing to relocate to Huntsville, AL for on-site work (experience)

Responsibilities

  • Support programs in material selection, metallurgy, fabrication, composites, ceramics, and process improvements
  • Mentor junior staff on testing techniques and data presentations
  • Provide M&P insights for bid and proposal activities
  • Investigate non-conformances and recommend resolutions
  • Manage materials characterization and mechanical tests including planning and procedures
  • Coordinate with procurement and suppliers to mitigate risks
  • Serve as liaison between department, internal teams, and customers
  • Provide technical expertise for supplier evaluations
