Join Leidos at FHWA’s Saxton Transportation Operations Laboratory (STOL)

Shape the future of transportation with Leidos, operating the USDOT’s premier research lab focused on safety, mobility, and environmental impacts. Support emerging tech like vehicle automation and V2X communications. This full-time on-site role in McLean, VA, drives AI innovation for FHWA projects.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead data reviews and AI scouting for freight analytics, sensor fusion, computer vision.
  • Integrate multi-source data (WIM, imagery, weather) via ETL, tackling bias and sparsity.
  • Develop/deploy ML models for OS/OW vehicle classification, TMC crash prediction, synthetic data generation.
  • Evaluate models for real-world robustness and scalability.
  • Engage stakeholders through workshops with state DOTs, MPOs, agencies.
  • Pursue new AI initiatives, crafting roadmaps for ITS anomaly detection and optimization.
  • Ensure FHWA compliance via reporting and cross-team collaboration.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s in relevant field (advanced degree preferred) + 5+ years AI/ML experience.
  • Expertise in TensorFlow/PyTorch, Pandas, deep learning, GANs.
  • DOT collaboration and business development experience required.
  • 2+ years non-academic work; US authorization + Public Trust eligibility.

  • Experience collaborating with state/local DOTs and business development (experience)
  • US work authorization and eligibility for Public Trust Clearance (3/5 years US residency) (experience)
  • Proven data preparation for multimodal real-world applications (experience)

Responsibilities

  • Conduct data/literature reviews on AI for freight, safety, operations
  • Prepare/integrate multimodal datasets addressing quality issues
  • Design/deploy AI/ML models for vehicle classification, crash prediction, synthetic data
  • Evaluate model performance and recommend robustness improvements
  • Support stakeholder outreach with DOTs, MPOs via workshops/briefings
  • Identify new AI opportunities and develop roadmaps/proposals
  • Collaborate on FHWA alignment, reporting, risk management
