Transportation Modeler Intern III – Join Leidos at FHWA Turner-Fairbank Research Center

Leidos is seeking a Transportation Modeler Intern III in McLean, VA, for January through July 2026. This in-person role (20-30 hours/week) supports cutting-edge research in traffic operations, connected and automated vehicles (CAV), and data-driven transportation management at the FHWA Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with researchers to define, test, and refine data importation, visualization, and analysis tools.
  • Prepare, validate, and preprocess large-scale vehicle trajectory and traffic datasets.
  • Conduct software testing, quality assurance, and performance validation.
  • Design user interfaces and visualization workflows for enhanced usability.
  • Perform data analysis and create visualizations using Python or similar tools.
  • Contribute to technical documentation, progress reports, and presentations.
  • Setup and troubleshoot laboratory computing environments.
  • Participate in team meetings to share results and solve technical challenges.

Basic Qualifications

  • Enrolled in Master's/PhD program in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or related field.
  • Coursework/experience in transportation engineering, computer science, or electrical engineering.
  • Python or MATLAB programming experience.
  • Familiarity with Pandas, Plotly, Matplotlib, or equivalent tools.
  • Strong communication skills and Microsoft Office proficiency.
  • Eligible for Public Trust clearance (3 years US residency).
  • US work authorization without sponsorship; valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in ITS, data analytics, or connected vehicle technologies.
  • GUI development or interactive visualization skills.
  • Knowledge of Git/GitHub and software testing best practices.
  • Expertise in simulation models, algorithm implementation (Python/C++).

  • Participate in software testing and quality assurance
  • Contribute to design and evaluation of user interfaces and data visualization workflows
  • Conduct data-driven analysis and visualizations using Python
  • Support preparation of technical documentation, reports, and presentations
  • Assist in system setup, troubleshooting, and lab environment configuration
  • Collaborate with team in meetings to review progress and discuss solutions
