Join Leidos as a Transportation Safety and Operations Engineer

Leidos, a leader in transportation research, seeks an experienced Transportation Safety and Operations Engineer to lead multi-disciplinary programs across federal, state, and local contracts. Based in our McLean, VA office with hybrid remote flexibility up to 50%, this role offers the chance to shape innovative safety and operations initiatives. Explore our Surface Transportation group and the Saxton Transportation Operations Laboratory (STOL).

Key Responsibilities

Program and Project Management

  • Serve as Program Manager for Federal safety research contracts, acting as the primary point of contact for clients, subcontractors, and teams.
  • Oversee transportation safety, operations, and data projects, managing plans, budgets, schedules, and deliverables.
  • Assign tasks, monitor progress, and foster client relationships with collaborative leadership.

Technical Leadership

  • Guide project teams on transportation system safety, TSMO strategies, and data roles.
  • Lead safety reviews, propose infrastructure improvements, and manage ITS like traffic monitoring and signals.
  • Coordinate maintenance, asset management, and ensure compliance with safety best practices.

Proposal Development

  • Lead proposals, bid strategies, labor estimates, and business development for growth.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s or higher in Transportation/Civil/Systems Engineering or related.
  • 12+ years managing transportation projects, ideally with DOTs, FHWA, USDOT ITS.
  • Strong research methodologies, data analysis, financial management, and stakeholder skills.
  • US work authorization and Public Trust clearance eligibility (3 years US residency in last 5).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with IRB, Safety research programs, and publications demonstrating State DOT expertise.

  • Proven project financial management, invoicing, and contract compliance (experience)
  • Ability to obtain Public Trust clearance and legal US work authorization without sponsorship (experience)
