Mechanical Design & Release Engineer, Battery Structures at Rivian

Role Overview

Join Rivian's mission to keep the world adventurous forever with emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles. As a Mechanical Design & Release Engineer, Battery Structures in Irvine, California, you'll engineer structural components for R1, R2, and R3 platforms. Balance performance, cost, safety, reliability, manufacturability, timing, and aesthetics through cross-functional collaboration at our design headquarters.

This onsite role demands a first-principles design thinking mindset to reframe problems and innovate in unknown territories. Work with Body Structures and Energy Storage teams on tightly integrated solutions for vehicle attributes, pack EMC, grounding, venting, sealing, and thermal management.

Key Responsibilities at Rivian

  • Own battery structure component development from concept to production for EV platforms.
  • Manage BOM cost and mass optimization for responsible parts to meet program goals.
  • Coordinate DFM studies and tooling investment analysis with manufacturing partners.
  • Deliver quality capable designs producible at rate for the right cost.
  • Create engineering release documents including 2D drawings, Critical Function Documents, and DVP.
  • Lead risk management via DFMEA, design feasibility, and validation actions.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally on crash, durability, and NVH requirements.
  • Integrate with downstream teams for advanced manufacturing, quality, reliability, and service.
  • Challenge conventions with curiosity-driven 'Why?' questioning.

Qualifications & Requirements

To excel as Mechanical Design & Release Engineer, Battery Structures, you need:

  • Bachelor's of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 5+ years industry experience owning components like battery enclosures, chassis subframes, motor housings, or body structures.
  • Proven track record solving complex problems in sealing, EMC, durability, crash while managing costs/timing.
  • Hands-on component/subsystem testing experience.
  • Strong structural engineering foundation with first-principles approach.
  • Automotive OEM/supplier experience or race team background a plus.
  • Excellent collaboration skills and passion for continuous improvement.

Salary & Benefits

Salary Range: $107,800 - $134,800 USD yearly for California applicants (determined by experience, location, and factors permitted by law).
