A Day in the Life

The Diabetes Operating Unit focuses on improving the lives of those within the global diabetes community. As a business, we strive to empower people with diabetes to live life on their terms by delivering innovation that truly matters and providing support in the ways they need it. Our portfolio of innovative solutions are designed to provide customers greater freedom and better health, helping them achieve better glucose control, while spending less time managing their disease.

This position is an exciting opportunity to work with Medtronic's Diabetes business. Medtronic has announced its intention to separate the Diabetes division to promote future growth and innovation within the business and reallocate investments and resources across Medtronic, subject to applicable information and consultation requirements. This separation provides our team with a bold opportunity to unleash our potential, enabling us to operate with greater speed and agility. As a separate entity, we anticipate leveraging increased investments to drive meaningful innovation and enhance our impact on patient care.

A Day in the Life
We are seeking a highly experienced and strategic Legal Director to lead and shape Medtronic’s legal strategy across the EMEA region. This role is both regional and functional in nature — balancing leadership of a small legal team with hands-on strategic counsel to business leaders and functional partners.

The successful candidate will serve as a key member of the Legal Leadership Team, driving excellence, compliance, and operational integrity across a diverse and dynamic market landscape.

Key Responsibilities

  • Legal Strategy & Leadership:
    Develop, implement, and continuously enhance MiniMed’s regional legal strategy and overarching legal program, ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations while enabling business growth.
  • Business Partnering:
    Act as a trusted advisor to senior leaders across commercial, HR, finance, regulatory, and clinical functions, providing pragmatic and business-savvy legal advice to advance strategic priorities.
  • Commercial Legal Counsel:
    Represent MiniMed’s legal interests across EMEA, managing a broad portfolio of contracts, negotiations, and business initiatives with a focus on risk mitigation and ethical business conduct.
  • Team Development:
    Lead, mentor, and develop a team of legal professionals across the region, fostering professional growth, collaboration, and alignment with Medtronic’s mission and values.
  • Regulatory Compliance:
    Stay abreast of evolving healthcare regulations and ensure adherence to all relevant laws, policies, and ethical standards across jurisdictions.
  • Dispute & Litigation Management:
    Oversee commercial disputes and investigations, engaging and managing external counsel where necessary, and ensuring timely, effective resolution.
  • Training & Education:
    Promote a culture of compliance by developing and delivering training programs to enhance employee understanding of legal and ethical obligations.
  • Continuous Improvement:
    Monitor and assess legal risks, develop proactive mitigation strategies, and continuously enhance processes, documentation, and program effectiveness.
  • Spin-Off / Separation Activities:
    • Lead legal workstreams supporting the separation of the Diabetes business, including entity creation, corporate governance setup, and transition services agreements (TSAs).
    • Advise on structuring, contracting, and risk allocation to enable a smooth transition to standalone operations.
    • Collaborate with Global Separation Management Office (SMO), Finance, HR, and Compliance to ensure Day 1 legal readiness and continuity of operations.
    • Manage cross-border complexities related to licenses, contracts, intellectual property, and employment law through the transition period.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS "Must Have's"

  • 10+ years of legal experience.
  • Experience in a law firm, corporate legal department or in-house counsel role

  • Healthcare industry experience – pharma, medical device, diagnostics, life sciences etc.
  • Leadership gravitas and a proven ability to influence leadership at all levels of an organization.
  • An adept ability to issue spot with a solution-oriented and continuous improvement mindset.
  • Ability to identify high risk situations and provide appropriate guidance, including the ability to make bold and courageous decisions.  
  • Ability to manage and execute multiple complex projects across multiple stakeholder groups and countries within required timelines and expectations
  • Managerial experience and expertise with onsite and remote team members
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Financial and Business Acumen
  • Courage, integrity and strong ethical character; and
  • Strong understanding of, and ability to demonstrate, the following cultural norms:  act boldly; compete to win; move with speed & decisiveness; foster belonging; and deliver results the right way
  • Reasonable travel will be expected.
