As Engineering Manager for Multimodal APIs at OpenAI, you'll spearhead a team responsible for the industry's leading AI platform. Our multimodal APIs enable startups, indie developers, and Fortune 500 companies to harness diverse AI modalities at scale. You'll own the product roadmap, driving innovations in real-time processing, speech transcription (Whisper), speech generation (TTS), and image generation (DALL-E and 4o). Key Responsibilities

• Build, mentor, and grow a high-performing engineering team specializing in multimodal API products like realtime API, Whisper transcription, TTS speech generation, and DALL-E image APIs.
• Define and execute the product roadmap for multimodal offerings, prioritizing features that scale to millions of end users.
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, researchers, and stakeholders to align on strategic vision and priorities.
• Partner with research teams to adapt core multimodal models for production API use cases, enhancing performance and reliability.
• Lead technical and architectural decisions, focusing on scalability, robustness, low-latency real-time systems, and exceptional developer experience.
• Cultivate a team culture of innovation, continuous improvement, accountability, and psychological safety.
• Oversee delivery of APIs for real-time interactions, speech-to-text, text-to-speech, and generative image creation.
• Drive cross-functional initiatives to integrate new AI modalities into the OpenAI API suite.
• Monitor industry trends in multimodal AI, audio processing, computer vision, and streaming technologies.
• Implement best practices in software engineering, DevOps, and ML operations for high-availability services.
• Mentor engineers on career growth, technical excellence, and leadership skills.
• Ensure compliance with safety standards in AI deployments, aligning with OpenAI's core values.
• Contribute to hiring, onboarding, and retention strategies for top talent in AI engineering.

Qualifications

To succeed, you'll need proven engineering management experience in high-scale environments. Key requirements include:

• 5+ years managing engineering teams delivering complex, production-grade products.
• Deep technical expertise in software architecture, distributed systems, and modern practices like microservices and CI/CD.
• Strong communication skills for bridging engineering, product, design, and research.
• Hands-on knowledge or passion for multimodal AI, including speech tech (ASR/TTS), real-time streaming, and generative models.
• Thrives in fast-paced startups with ambiguous priorities.
• Preferred: Experience in AI/ML APIs, cloud platforms (AWS/GCP), audio/computer vision pipelines.

Salary & Benefits
