Role Overview

The Enterprise Security Engineer plays a pivotal role within OpenAI's Security organization, ensuring that researchers, engineers, and staff have secure, reliable tools to push the boundaries of AI innovation. You'll implement enterprise-grade security across internal infrastructure, develop novel protections using OpenAI's own AI models, and champion Zero Trust principles in a fast-paced, technical environment.

This role spans endpoint management, cloud security, identity governance, and threat detection. As part of a small but mighty IT team, you'll have broad ownership to build security programs from the ground up. Remote work is fully supported across the US, with relocation assistance available to San Francisco for those preferring in-office collaboration.

OpenAI's security mandate is ambitious: deliver world-class protection for humanity's most important AI research without compromising developer velocity. You'll harden macOS fleets, implement DLP across SaaS platforms, and leverage AI for proactive threat hunting.

Key Responsibilities

As an Enterprise Security Engineer at OpenAI, your impact will be immediate and far-reaching:

• Design and deploy security controls protecting sensitive AI research data from unauthorized access, disclosure, or exfiltration.
• Monitor systems 24/7 using advanced SIEM and EDR solutions, triaging alerts and leading incident response efforts.
• Develop and maintain comprehensive security policies aligned with NIST frameworks and Zero Trust Architecture.
• Collaborate with IT to secure AzureAD, GSuite, GitHub Enterprise, and other SaaS platforms using least-privilege principles.
• Manage macOS endpoint fleets with MDM solutions, implementing endpoint hardening and EDR deployment at scale.
• Engineer intelligent data sharing controls, DLP policies, and dynamic groups to prevent data loss across collaboration tools.
• Apply OpenAI's proprietary AI models for automated threat detection, data classification, and security orchestration.
• Conduct vulnerability assessments, prioritize remediation based on risk, and validate fixes through rigorous testing.
• Lead employee security awareness training, phishing simulations, and best-practice consultations.
• Contribute to strategic security roadmaps tracking emerging threats like AI-specific attacks and supply chain risks.
• Implement identity federation across SAML, OAuth, SCIM while maintaining robust email security (SPF/DKIM/DMARC).
• Script automation using Python/Bash to streamline security operations and reduce manual toil.
• Stay ahead of adversary TTPs, contributing threat intelligence to enhance detection capabilities.

Qualifications

Successful candidates demonstrate technical depth across enterprise security domains and the soft skills to thrive in a high-stakes research environment:

• 5+ years enterprise security experience, preferably protecting macOS fleets in tech/research organizations.
• Expertise deploying/managing EDR solutions (CrowdStrike, SentinelOne, Carbon Black) and MDM frameworks.
• Hands-on cloud security experience with AWS, Azure, including IAM, networking, and compliance controls.
• Advanced knowledge of identity protocols (SAML 2.0, OAuth 2.0, SCIM 2.0) and SSO implementations.
• Proven email security implementations including DMARC alignment and anti-phishing configurations.
• Scripting proficiency (Python, Bash, PowerShell) for security automation and orchestration.
• Deep understanding of MITRE ATT&CK framework and modern adversary behaviors.
• Experience with DLP, CASB, and SaaS security platforms like Microsoft Purview or Netskope.
• Strong communicator who can translate technical risks to non-technical stakeholders.
• Track record independently managing security projects from inception to production.

Salary & Benefits

OpenAI offers competitive compensation for Enterprise Security Engineers ranging from $185,000 - $265,000 base salary (USD/year), plus equity, bonus, and comprehensive benefits. Total compensation reflects experience, location adjustments, and market data.
