Our Strategic Finance Data Science team partners with Product, Engineering, and Go-To-Market leaders to deliver rigorous economic modeling and real-time predictions powering high-stakes decisions. As a founding member of our Forecasting pillar, you'll develop scalable infrastructure predicting user growth (DAU/WAU), revenue trajectories, compute consumption, customer lifetime value (LTV), and profitability metrics.

This hybrid role in San Francisco, CA (3 days/week in office) combines technical depth with strategic impact. Your models will directly influence pricing strategies, infrastructure investments, growth planning, and executive decision-making. With relocation assistance available, this is your chance to work at the intersection of cutting-edge machine learning and business strategy.

Ideal candidates bring 7+ years of applied data science experience, advanced time-series expertise, and proven ability to productionize ML systems. If you excel at building interpretable forecasts that drive millions in business value, this role will challenge and reward you.

Key Responsibilities

As a senior ML Data Scientist in Forecasting, you'll own critical initiatives end-to-end:

  • Develop advanced time-series forecasting models (ARIMA, Prophet, LSTMs, transformers) for user engagement, revenue, compute load, and profitability across OpenAI's ecosystem.
  • Lead end-to-end ML lifecycle: from business scoping and feature engineering through prototyping, A/B experimentation, production deployment, and ongoing monitoring.
  • Build scalable production forecasting systems handling massive datasets with low-latency inference requirements.
  • Create self-service forecasting platforms empowering Product, Finance, and GTM teams with real-time predictions and scenario analysis.
  • Research emerging techniques like TimeGPT, causal forecasting, and LLM-augmented prediction models, rapidly prototyping and evaluating for production use.
  • Translate complex model outputs into strategic business insights, creating executive dashboards and decision frameworks.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to integrate forecasts into planning cycles, experimentation platforms, and investment models.
  • Design robust model monitoring and retraining pipelines ensuring long-term accuracy in dynamic environments.
  • Optimize models balancing performance, explainability, and computational efficiency for stakeholder trust and scalability.
  • Partner with infrastructure teams to forecast compute resource demands supporting OpenAI's rapid scaling.

Qualifications & Requirements

We're seeking exceptional talent with:

  • Advanced degree (MS/PhD) in Statistics, Computer Science, Economics, Operations Research, or quantitative field.
  • 7+ years applied data science experience, with deep forecasting/predictive modeling expertise.
  • Time-series mastery: ARIMA, Prophet, neural networks, anomaly detection, hierarchical forecasting.
  • Production ML experience: full lifecycle ownership including MLOps, monitoring, and scaling.
  • Technical stack: Expert Python/SQL; proficient scikit-learn, PyTorch/TensorFlow, forecasting libraries.
  • Business impact: Proven ability to drive multimillion-dollar decisions through data science.
  • Cross-functional collaboration with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Salary & Benefits

Compensation Range: $250,000 - $450,000 USD annually (base + equity + bonus), depending on experience and location. Total compensation includes meaningful equity in OpenAI.

Comprehensive Benefits Package:

  • Top-tier medical, dental, vision insurance
