The Data Visualization team at OpenAI is at the heart of our mission to ensure safe AGI benefits all of humanity. We build and maintain sophisticated visualization tools that analyze software and hardware aspects of our custom-built hyperscale supercomputers. From visualizing complex hardware topologies (nodes, networks, racks) to monitoring user training jobs and assessing system health, our tools enable researchers to maximize supercomputing capacity for training frontier AI models.

Incubated within OpenAI's Research team, we operate at the forefront of AI infrastructure innovation. Combining HPC traditions with modern cloud and containerized environments (Kubernetes, Azure), we complement platform teams by minimizing researcher disruption from hardware faults. Our emphasis on efficient job scheduling, quota management, and execution workflows ensures reliability, scalability, and user-friendliness.

As a Software Engineer, Data Visualization, you'll design, develop, and maintain full-stack solutions that provide intuitive insights into hyperscale systems. This 0-1 effort offers leadership opportunities as the team grows, making it perfect for experienced full-stack engineers passionate about scientific visualization and AI infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

Your day-to-day will involve hands-on development across the full stack, from pixel-perfect React front-ends to scalable Python/Node.js back-ends processing petabytes of telemetry data. Key responsibilities include:

• Developing full-stack visualization tools for hardware analysis (nodes, networks, racks, etc.)
• Designing intuitive React-based interfaces for real-time supercomputer monitoring
• Building robust back-end APIs with Python/Node.js and SQL/Snowflake integration
• Collaborating with researchers to translate complex needs into actionable visualizations
• Ensuring tool performance at hyperscale with optimization for massive datasets
• Integrating libraries like Plotly, Grafana for advanced charting and dashboards
• Monitoring training job performance across distributed GPU clusters
• Creating system health dashboards for proactive fault detection
• Leading technical development for new 0-1 visualization products
• Optimizing for HPC environments with Kubernetes container orchestration
• Documenting tools and mentoring future team members
• Iterating based on researcher feedback to drive platform improvements

Expect to work closely with research, platform, and infrastructure teams in a fast-paced, collaborative environment where your code directly impacts frontier AI research.

Qualifications

We're seeking senior full-stack engineers with proven experience in scientific visualization and infrastructure monitoring. Required qualifications include:

• 5+ years full-stack development experience building visualization tools
• Expertise in Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, SQL for data-intensive applications
• Strong React proficiency for building complex, responsive UIs
• Experience with Node.js or similar for scalable back-end services
• Hands-on work with Snowflake or similar cloud data warehouses
• Deep knowledge of Plotly, Grafana, D3.js or equivalent visualization frameworks
• Understanding of full-stack architecture patterns and best practices
• Experience with HPC, cloud infrastructure, or large-scale distributed systems
• Bonus: Technical leadership experience managing engineering teams
• Bonus: Kubernetes, Docker, Azure/AWS/GCP container orchestration

Strong problem-solving, communication skills, and passion for AI infrastructure are essential. U.S. work authorization required.

Salary & Benefits

OpenAI offers competitive compensation packages for senior Software Engineers in Data Visualization. Total compensation typically ranges from $220,000 - $350,000 USD annually, including base salary, equity, and comprehensive benefits.
