Our billing systems must scale to meet the needs of fast-growing businesses using our APIs, balancing subscription models with usage-based pricing for enterprise customers.

In this critical role, you'll collaborate with Go-To-Market (GTM), Finance, Product, and Data teams to build a robust, flexible billing platform. Key Responsibilities

1. Architect and implement the next-generation billing and monetization systems powering OpenAI's product ecosystem.
2. Develop end-to-end billing integrations tailored for ChatGPT Enterprise users and API developers worldwide.
3. Design a highly versatile billing platform supporting hybrid subscription and usage-based pricing models.
4. Ensure enterprise-grade scalability, flexibility, and reliability in all billing infrastructure components.
5. Build intuitive tools enabling internal teams to incorporate real-time billing data into their operational workflows.
6. Partner closely with Product Managers to align billing features with evolving AI product roadmaps.
7. Collaborate with Data Science teams to integrate advanced analytics into billing intelligence systems.
8. Work hand-in-hand with Finance teams to meet compliance and revenue recognition requirements.
9. Engage Go-To-Market stakeholders to optimize pricing strategies through technical implementations.
10. Lead engineering efforts to launch new monetization capabilities supporting product expansion.
11. Spearhead system redevelopment initiatives to handle exponential growth in usage volumes.
12. Champion best practices for safe, responsible deployment of financial systems at global scale.
13. Monitor production systems and proactively address scaling bottlenecks before they impact customers.

Qualifications

To succeed in this role, you'll need:

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, ideally with payments/billing systems.
• Demonstrated expertise building production systems that scale to millions of users.
• Experience collaborating across engineering, product, finance, and sales organizations.
• Proven ability to thrive in fast-paced environments with ambiguous requirements.
• Strong full-stack development skills across modern technology stacks.
• Passion for crafting exceptional user experiences that solve real customer problems.
• Excellent communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences alike.
• Track record of learning new domains quickly and teaching others effectively.

Bonus: Experience with Stripe, AWS billing, usage-based metering, or AI/ML infrastructure.

Salary & Benefits

Salary Range: $220,000 - $350,000 USD per year (based on experience and location), plus equity in OpenAI.
