Join OpenAI's Applications Engineering team as a Software Engineer, Internal Applications - Enterprise in San Francisco, California. This senior-level role focuses on engineering, owning, and evolving OpenAI’s core productivity ecosystem. We're not just managing SaaS tools—we're building custom integrations, automation, and intelligent workforce solutions that off-the-shelf software can't handle.

With a company-wide perspective and deep technical expertise, you'll bridge team gaps, scale applications operationally, and deliver secure, seamless employee experiences. Proactively design custom tools using OpenAI's models to optimize identity management (IAM), build dashboards, and automate workflows. Ideal for engineers passionate about automation, IaC, cloud services, and solving enterprise workforce challenges.

This position offers a unique opportunity to impact every OpenAI employee by enhancing technology services through Python development, multi-cloud expertise (Azure, AWS, GCP), Slack bots, and Zero Trust security. If you thrive on building scalable, resilient systems, this role at the forefront of AI innovation is for you.

Key focus areas include IAM automation, CI/CD pipelines, internal tooling, and cross-functional collaboration to drive IT efficiencies and productivity gains.

Key Responsibilities

As a Software Engineer on this team, your impact will be immediate and broad-reaching. Here's what you'll do daily:

  • Design, build, implement, and maintain secure, scalable workforce technology infrastructure, automation workflows, and bespoke tooling to elevate the OpenAI employee experience.
  • Deliver critical IT efficiencies via custom software and first-party tools, enhancing technology service delivery across the enterprise.
  • Employ Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) with GitOps-driven solutions to manage workflows at massive scale.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for corporate infrastructure, deploying to tested environments in Azure, AWS, and GCP.
  • Create scalable internal tools and dashboards optimizing workflows and providing engineering operations visibility.
  • Design internal integrations like intelligent Slack bots and advanced workflow automations.
  • Automate IAM processes for access provisioning, lifecycle management, and internal app compliance.
  • Collaborate with IAM and security teams on cloud identity controls, Zero Trust alignment, and policy enforcement.
  • Implement RBAC and automated security policies to proactively mitigate risks.
  • Identify corporate tech improvement areas and deploy self-service solutions cross-functionally.
  • Manage multiple high-priority projects, ensuring alignment with business goals and operational efficiency.
  • Operationalize custom solutions where SaaS falls short, paving frictionless paths for teams.
  • Leverage OpenAI models to build intelligent automations unique to our AI-driven environment.

Expect to work in a fast-paced, collaborative setting where your code directly powers OpenAI's internal operations.

Qualifications

To succeed, bring these qualifications to the table:

  • 5+ years proficiency in Python (preferred) or modern languages for backend development.
  • Expert-level experience with Azure, AWS, GCP including infrastructure provisioning and management.
  • Deep knowledge of IaC tools (Terraform, etc.) and GitOps for enterprise-scale deployments.
  • Proven experience managing corporate infrastructure, CI/CD, and multi-cloud environments.
  • Strong IAM background: automation, access controls, lifecycle management.
  • Familiarity with Zero Trust, RBAC, and security compliance frameworks like SOC 2.
  • Track record building internal tools, dashboards, Slack bots, and workflow integrations.
  • Exceptional problem-solving for complex tech challenges in dynamic environments.
  • Cross-functional collaboration experience with security, engineering, and product teams.
  • Comfort managing multiple initiatives with business acumen.
  • BS in Computer Science or equivalent; advanced degrees a plus.

Candidates with AI/ML integration experience or OpenAI API usage will stand out.
