Job Description

Technical Program Manager, Foundations Data at OpenAI - San Francisco, CA

Join OpenAI's elite Foundations TPM Team and shape the future of artificial general intelligence (AGI) through world-class training data. This senior-level role offers the chance to lead trillion-token dataset programs that power breakthrough AI models used by hundreds of millions worldwide.

Role Overview

The Foundations TPM Team at OpenAI builds and manages some of the largest datasets in existence, spanning trillions of tokens across multiple modalities and languages. As a Technical Program Manager, Foundations Data, you'll bridge the gap between groundbreaking AI research and the massive-scale data infrastructure required to make it reality.

You'll also own the data platform roadmap, developing cutting-edge tools that empower both human experts and AI agents to search, filter, and curate internet-scale datasets efficiently.

This is hands-on technical program management at the frontier of AI. You'll thrive if you love solving ambiguous problems, driving cross-functional execution, and building systems that scale to unprecedented levels. Based in San Francisco with a hybrid model (3 days/week in office), this role includes relocation assistance for qualified candidates.

OpenAI's mission to ensure AGI benefits all humanity demands the best talent. If you've led ambitious technical programs and have deep fluency in data/AI infrastructure, this is your opportunity to make history.

Own Data Platform Roadmap: Define strategic direction and lead development of platform features that accelerate research velocity, from advanced search capabilities to AI-powered curation tools.

Partner with Researchers: Work shoulder-to-shoulder with AI researchers to translate complex data requirements into actionable acquisition and processing strategies.

Scale Internet-Scale Pipelines: Build and optimize data pipelines capable of handling massive volumes across diverse modalities and languages.

Cross-Functional Leadership: Coordinate engineering, product, and operations teams to deliver platform enhancements and data initiatives on aggressive timelines.

Risk Management & Communication: Proactively identify risks, communicate progress to leadership, and drive crisp decision-making in ambiguous situations.

Qualifications

Technical Program Leadership: 7+ years leading large, ambitious technical programs with demonstrated major impact on business outcomes.

Domain Expertise: Deep fluency in infrastructure, data engineering, or AI/ML systems. Experience with large-scale data processing pipelines highly preferred.

Research Collaboration: Proven ability to partner effectively with researchers and engineers, translating scientific needs into engineering requirements.

Communication Excellence: Exceptional skills in articulating complex technical problems and solutions to diverse audiences, from researchers to executives.

Ambiguity Navigation: Track record of driving results in fast-paced, uncertain environments with incomplete information.

Platform Experience: Experience owning product roadmaps and leading feature development for data-intensive platforms.

Scale Mindset: Familiarity with internet-scale systems, distributed computing, and massive dataset management.

Salary & Benefits

Competitive Compensation: Total compensation range of $285,000 - $425,000 USD annually, including base salary, equity, and performance bonuses. Exact offer based on experience and qualifications.
