Our Redwood City headquarters serves as the hub for groundbreaking database advancements that redefine data performance and scalability.

Position Overview

As a Consulting Member of Technical Staff, you will play a pivotal role in building next-generation indexing technologies for Oracle Database, encompassing B-tree, Iceberg, vector indexes, and optimizations for AI-scale data performance. This position offers the opportunity to tackle complex challenges at the intersection of database engineering, AI, and massive-scale data processing. Join a high-impact team driving Oracle's leadership in database innovation and contribute to products used by Fortune 500 companies globally.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement advanced indexing structures, including B-tree enhancements, Iceberg table formats, and vector indexes for high-dimensional data.
  • Optimize database performance for AI-scale workloads, focusing on query speed, storage efficiency, and concurrency at petabyte levels.
  • Develop novel algorithms for indexing that support machine learning vector similarity searches and semantic querying.
  • Collaborate with product managers and architects to define requirements for next-gen indexing features in Oracle Database.
  • Prototype and benchmark indexing solutions using real-world datasets from enterprise customers.
  • Integrate indexing technologies with Oracle's cloud infrastructure to enable seamless hybrid and multi-cloud deployments.
  • Conduct performance tuning and scalability testing under extreme loads, iterating based on empirical data.
  • Mentor junior engineers on database internals, indexing principles, and best practices for AI data pipelines.
  • Contribute to open-source components of indexing tech stacks like Apache Iceberg while advancing Oracle's proprietary innovations.
  • Analyze production telemetry to identify indexing bottlenecks and propose data-driven improvements.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in database systems development, with deep knowledge of indexing structures like B-trees.
  • Strong proficiency in C++, Java, or Rust for high-performance systems programming.
  • Proven track record of optimizing data structures for large-scale, distributed environments.
  • Experience with vector databases, similarity search algorithms (e.g., HNSW, IVF), or AI/ML data pipelines.
  • Solid understanding of storage engines, query optimization, and transaction processing.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills demonstrated through complex technical projects.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in cross-functional teams and communicate technical concepts clearly.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Computer Science with research in databases, indexing, or AI systems.
  • Hands-on experience with Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake, or similar table formats.
  • Contributions to open-source database projects or publications in SIGMOD, VLDB, or similar venues.
  • Familiarity with Oracle Database internals or other commercial RDBMS like PostgreSQL, MySQL.
  • Experience scaling systems for AI workloads using frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch.

What We Offer

  • Competitive base salary and performance-based bonuses with target total compensation $250K-$350K+.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance with low employee premiums.
  • 401(k) matching program and employee stock purchase plan for long-term wealth building.
  • Flexible time off, including unlimited PTO and paid family leave.
  • Professional development stipend for conferences, certifications, and advanced training.
  • Modern campus with gym, on-site dining, and hybrid work flexibility in Redwood City, CA.
