Job Description

Company Overview

Oracle Corporation is a global leader in enterprise cloud infrastructure, database software, and applications, powering thousands of the world's most complex organizations. With Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), we deliver high-performance, secure, and scalable cloud services that redefine enterprise computing. Join us to innovate at the forefront of cloud technology and shape the future of autonomous cloud operations.

Position Overview

As a Principal Member of Technical Staff in OCI, you will build the autonomous core of our cloud platform by redesigning runtime and control planes to scale seamlessly to thousands of regions worldwide. This high-impact role offers rare ownership, allowing you to architect foundational systems that drive Oracle's next-generation cloud infrastructure. You will tackle unprecedented scale challenges, leveraging cutting-edge technologies to create self-managing, resilient systems that operate autonomously across global footprints.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architect and redesign OCI runtime and control planes to achieve autonomous operations at exascale, supporting thousands of regions.
  • Lead the development of self-healing, AI-driven systems that optimize resource allocation and fault tolerance across distributed cloud environments.
  • Design scalable control plane architectures that handle petabyte-scale data flows and millions of concurrent operations with zero downtime.
  • Prototype and implement innovative runtime models for container orchestration and virtual machine management at global scale.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and evolve technical roadmaps for OCI's autonomous core infrastructure.
  • Conduct performance tuning and capacity planning for control planes under extreme workloads and multi-region failover scenarios.
  • Mentor senior engineers on distributed systems principles and contribute to open-source projects advancing cloud autonomy.
  • Drive technical deep dives and proof-of-concepts to validate new paradigms in cloud runtime scalability.
  • Analyze production telemetry data to identify bottlenecks and proactively enhance system reliability and efficiency.
  • Represent OCI in industry forums, publishing papers on autonomous cloud infrastructure innovations.

Required Qualifications

  • 12+ years of experience in software engineering with a focus on distributed systems and cloud infrastructure.
  • Deep expertise in designing and building high-scale runtime environments (e.g., Kubernetes, JVM, or bare-metal hypervisors).
  • Proven track record of owning control plane architectures in production cloud services handling millions of requests per second.
  • Strong proficiency in systems programming languages such as C++, Rust, Go, or Java, with experience in low-level optimizations.
  • Hands-on experience with large-scale distributed databases, messaging systems, and consensus protocols (e.g., Raft, Paxos).
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical projects from ideation to production deployment.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a data-driven approach to system design and troubleshooting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with autonomous systems, AI/ML integration for infrastructure, or self-optimizing workloads.
  • Prior work on multi-region cloud platforms or global-scale networking and storage systems.
  • Contributions to open-source projects in cloud-native technologies or distributed computing.
  • PhD in Computer Science with research in scalable systems or fault-tolerant computing.
  • Familiarity with OCI, AWS, GCP, or Azure at an architectural level.

What We Offer

  • Competitive base salary, stock options, and performance-based bonuses.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance with low employee premiums.
  • Generous 401(k) matching and employee stock purchase plan.
  • Flexible time off, including unlimited PTO and paid family leave.
  • Professional development stipend for conferences, certifications, and advanced training.
  • Modern Seattle office with ergonomic setups, catered meals, and wellness programs.

About the Team

The OCI Autonomous Core team is a world-class group of engineers pioneering the future of cloud infrastructure at unprecedented scale. We thrive on solving hard problems collaboratively, with a culture that values ownership, innovation, and rapid iteration.
