Position Overview

As a Principal Member Technical Staff in Oracle Database Kernel Development, you will design, develop, and optimize scalable Vector AI and data systems to deliver enterprise-grade performance. This role involves deep technical expertise in database internals, AI vector processing, and high-performance computing, contributing to Oracle's next-generation database innovations. Based in Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico, you will collaborate with elite engineering teams to solve complex challenges in AI-driven data management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and architect scalable Vector AI systems within the Oracle Database kernel for high-performance vector search and similarity matching.
  • Develop and optimize kernel-level algorithms for vector embeddings, indexing, and retrieval to support enterprise AI workloads.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve performance bottlenecks in large-scale data systems handling petabyte-scale datasets.
  • Implement robust, fault-tolerant data processing pipelines integrated with Oracle's Exadata and cloud infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with product managers and researchers to define and prototype new Vector AI features for Oracle Database.
  • Conduct code reviews, mentor junior engineers, and ensure adherence to Oracle's engineering best practices.
  • Perform benchmarking and tuning of database kernel components for AI/ML use cases under extreme loads.
  • Integrate Vector AI capabilities with Oracle's ecosystem, including Autonomous Database and OCI services.
  • Investigate and innovate on storage, query optimization, and parallelism for vector data operations.
  • Contribute to technical documentation, patents, and knowledge sharing within the kernel development team.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in software development, with at least 5 years in database kernel or systems programming.
  • Strong proficiency in C/C++ and low-level programming for performance-critical systems.
  • Deep knowledge of database internals, including storage engines, query optimization, and indexing.
  • Experience with AI/ML concepts, particularly vector embeddings, similarity search (e.g., ANN algorithms like HNSW, IVF).
  • Proven track record of designing and shipping scalable, high-performance data systems.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to debug complex, multi-threaded applications.
  • Strong communication skills and experience working in cross-functional, global teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Computer Science with focus on databases, AI, or distributed systems.
  • Experience with Oracle Database development or similar enterprise RDBMS (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL internals).
  • Familiarity with GPU/accelerator programming (e.g., CUDA) for vector computations.
  • Contributions to open-source projects in databases, AI libraries (e.g., FAISS, Milvus), or kernel development.
  • Knowledge of cloud-native architectures and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI).
