Job Description

Company Overview

Oracle Corporation is a global leader in enterprise cloud infrastructure, database software, and emerging AI technologies, powering mission-critical applications for thousands of organizations worldwide. With a commitment to innovation, Oracle is at the forefront of building the world's largest AI superclusters to accelerate breakthroughs in artificial intelligence and machine learning. Our diverse teams collaborate to deliver scalable, secure, and high-performance solutions that transform industries.

Position Overview

As a Principal Optical Engineer - AI Infrastructure at Oracle, you will lead the development and support of cutting-edge AI cluster network fabrics and GPU compute server systems. This role demands a deep expertise in optical networking at both protocol and hardware levels, combined with advanced programming skills to enable intensive automation in a production environment. You will play a pivotal role in scaling Oracle's AI infrastructure to support exascale computing demands, ensuring ultra-low latency and high-bandwidth connectivity for next-generation AI workloads.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and optimize optical network architectures for AI clusters, integrating high-speed transceivers and fiber optic systems to achieve petabit-scale throughput.
  • Develop and maintain automation scripts and tools for provisioning, monitoring, and troubleshooting optical network fabrics in production environments.
  • Lead root-cause analysis and resolution of complex optical hardware and protocol issues impacting GPU compute server performance.
  • Collaborate with hardware engineers to specify and validate custom optical components for AI infrastructure scalability.
  • Implement and tune optical protocols such as Coherent Optics, DWDM, and OTN to minimize latency in AI training and inference workloads.
  • Build simulation models and perform capacity planning for optical networks supporting multi-tenant AI superclusters.
  • Mentor junior engineers on optical networking best practices and production deployment strategies.
  • Integrate optical systems with SDN controllers and orchestration platforms for dynamic resource allocation in AI environments.
  • Conduct performance benchmarking and optimization of GPU-to-GPU interconnects using optical technologies.
  • Contribute to patents and technical publications advancing optical innovations in AI infrastructure.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field; Master's or PhD preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in optical networking, with hands-on expertise in protocol design and hardware implementation.
  • Deep knowledge of optical technologies including DWDM, coherent optics, transponders, and muxponders.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C++, and Go for network automation and control plane development.
  • Strong understanding of AI infrastructure requirements, including GPU interconnects, InfiniBand, and Ethernet fabrics.
  • Experience with network simulation tools (e.g., NS-3, OMNeT++) and optical design software (e.g., VPI, OptiSystem).
  • Proven track record of deploying and operating production-scale optical networks with high availability.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) or hyperscale AI cluster deployments.
  • Familiarity with silicon photonics, pluggable optics (e.g., QSFP-DD, OSFP), and 800G/1.6T transceivers.
  • Background in machine learning frameworks and their networking demands (e.g., NCCL, Horovod).
  • Contributions to open-source optical networking projects or relevant standards bodies (e.g., OIF, IEEE).
  • Advanced certifications in optical networking (e.g., CCNP Service Provider, MEF-CECP).

What We Offer

  • Competitive base salary and performance-based bonuses with target total compensation exceeding $250K annually.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance with low employee premiums.
  • 401(k) matching program up to 6% of base salary, plus stock purchase plans.
  • Generous paid time off, including 120 hours PTO, parental leave, and flexible holidays.
  • Professional development stipend for conferences, certifications, and advanced training.
  • Remote-friendly work options with modern home office setup allowances.
