The Database Reliability Engineer IV position demands strong coding skills in Python, Ruby, or Golang, hands-on Kubernetes experience, and proven success in production database reliability. Key Responsibilities

• Partner closely with Engineering stakeholders to architect reliable, scalable, secure, and high-performance data platforms that power PagerDuty's core services.
• Establish and evolve standards and best practices for back-end data storage systems including MySQL, PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, and Cassandra.
• Develop custom tools and automation scripts enabling application engineers to seamlessly interact with, monitor, and optimize database performance.
• Provide end-to-end lifecycle management for databases: from provisioning and development through deployment, scaling, and graceful retirement.
• Enhance observability with advanced monitoring, alerting, and logging using tools like DataDog, Grafana, and New Relic specifically tailored for database health.
• Drive continuous improvements in customer experience through flexible connectivity options and proactive reliability engineering.
• Research and adopt emerging technology trends to deliver innovative solutions for complex data infrastructure challenges.
• Mentor and share DBRE expertise across the Engineering organization through knowledge shares, documentation, and pair programming.
• Participate in PagerDuty-managed 24/7 on-call rotations to maintain production system uptime and rapid incident response.
• Scale data streaming pipelines using Kafka, AWS Kinesis, and related frameworks like Kafka Connect and Streams.
• Implement infrastructure as code with Terraform for automated, repeatable database and cloud resource management.
• Automate CI/CD pipelines for database schema changes, performance tuning, and release processes using Jenkins or Buildkite.
• Collaborate on Kubernetes-based deployments ensuring containerized database services maintain high availability.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

• 5+ years in SRE, Database Reliability Engineering, or Software Development roles handling production systems.
• 3+ years managing relational and NoSQL databases like MySQL, PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, Cassandra in high-scale environments.
• Strong programming experience in Ruby, Python, Golang, or similar for automation and tooling.
• Proven AWS cloud-native infrastructure experience including EC2, RDS, ElastiCache, and VPC design.
• Hands-on work with Kubernetes or similar container schedulers for orchestrating database workloads.

Preferred Qualifications

• Expertise in Terraform for IaC managing database clusters and cloud resources.
• Deep knowledge of Kafka streaming including ZooKeeper, Kafka Connect, Streams, and KSQL integrations.
• Experience with observability stacks: DataDog, New Relic, Grafana for database metrics and logs.
• Familiarity with configuration management: Ansible, Chef, Puppet for infrastructure provisioning.
• Track record automating database CI/CD with Jenkins, CircleCI, Travis CI, or Buildkite.
