As a PC Platforms Kernel Engineer - Ubuntu Linux at Canonical's Beijing, China office, you'll make a tangible impact on millions of Ubuntu users by developing and maintaining high-quality kernel support for next-generation hardware. This office-based role involves working closely with world-leading OEM partners like Intel and AMD to bring Ubuntu to cutting-edge laptops, desktops, and workstations. Tackle complex challenges in Wi-Fi, Thunderbolt, BIOS, UEFI, power efficiency, and performance, while contributing patches upstream to the Linux kernel community.

Key Responsibilities

In this dynamic position, your day-to-day will include:

• Collaborating regularly with a globally distributed team of engineers.
• Working closely with external silicon and hardware manufacturers on bleeding-edge desktop, laptop, and server platforms.
• Diagnosing and resolving kernel issues reported by QA, customers, and the open source community.
• Enabling new Linux kernel features as requested by key customers and partners.
• Submitting, reviewing, and applying kernel patches in coordination with internal teams and external upstream maintainers.

Qualifications & Requirements

Canonical seeks self-starting engineers who thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. Key qualifications include:

• Well-organized with the ability to deliver to fixed schedules.
• Demonstrated professional communication skills when engaging with colleagues, partners, and the open source community.
• Excellent English communication, both written and oral.
• Significant programming experience in C, with Python and Bash scripting highly valued.
• Solid background in Git for version control and collaboration.
• Deep knowledge of Linux kernel subsystems, patching, and debugging.
• Experience with Linux kernel upstream processes and release cycles.
• Strong understanding of device drivers, Board Support Packages (BSPs), and low-level system engineering.
• Prior Ubuntu/Debian/Snap packaging experience is highly regarded.
• Knowledge of ACPI and UEFI is desirable.
• Willingness to travel globally up to 4 times per year for engineering events.
