Role Overview
As a Pet Groomer Trainee (Pet Stylist in Training), you'll receive hands-on training from our experienced Professional Styling teams through PetSmart’s Grooming Academy. This entry-level role builds foundational skills in delivering best-in-class salon services while ensuring pet safety and exceptional pet parent experiences. Located in Peoria, Illinois, this position offers a dynamic start to a rewarding career in pet care.
Key Responsibilities
Under supervision, perform full grooming services including baths, brushes, nail trims, teeth brushing, and sanitary care. Engage pet parents to recommend solutions, manage appointments, maintain salon cleanliness, and promote sales. Uphold safety standards, assist with emergencies, and contribute to store operations as needed.
Experience & Skills
Prior grooming experience preferred but not required—complete our Salon Academy for certification. Strong communication, organization, and composure under pressure are essential. Be prepared for physical demands like lifting 50+ lbs, standing for shifts, and working in a pet-filled environment. Flexibility for evenings, weekends, and holidays required.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills (experience)
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work in pet hair environment (experience)
Responsibilities
- Perform supervised bath, brush, grooming, nail trims, and sanitary services per PetSmart standards
- Recommend health and wellness solutions to pet parents
- Manage pet parent interactions, reservations, check-in/out, and client records
- Maintain salon cleanliness, sanitation, and pet safety protocols
- Promote salon sales, merchandise, and services to meet targets
- Assist in other store departments and respond to pet emergencies
