Description

The Senior Manager, Transportation Safety and Compliance is responsible for leading the company’s transportation safety and compliance strategy for Pilot. This role oversees compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR), ensures driver fleet safety programs are effective, and manages a team of Regional Safety Managers and the Driver Qualification team. The position plays a critical role in protecting team members, assets, and the environment, while driving a culture of zero incidents and regulatory excellence.

In this role you will: 

Leadership & Strategy

  • Develop and execute the company’s transportation safety strategy, with a focus on DOT compliance, driver safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of Regional Safety Managers and Driver Qualification Coordinators.
  • Partner with operations, HR, and training teams to ensure safety goals are aligned with business objectives.
  • Serve as the company’s subject matter expert in legal matters concerning transportation safety.
  • Utilize professional networks and other resources to remain up to date on industry best practices and safety systems.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Oversee compliance with all applicable DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, EPA, and state regulations related to petroleum fuel, diesel exhaust fluid, lubricant, hydrogen, and other hazardous material transportation.
  • Manage driver qualification processes, including onboarding, background checks, medical certifications, and ongoing compliance audits.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and implement proactive measures to maintain compliance.

Safety Programs & Performance

  • Develop, implement, and monitor driver safety programs focused on defensive driving, fatigue management, and hazardous materials handling.
  • Lead root cause analysis for collisions, incidents, and near misses; identify corrective actions and drive accountability for implementation.
  • Track and report safety performance metrics (e.g., preventable collisions, DOT violations, CSA scores, TRIR) to senior leadership.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Serve as the subject matter expert for transportation safety and DOT compliance across the enterprise.
  • Partner with fleet maintenance and dispatch teams to ensure equipment safety standards are upheld.
  • Deliver safety training, communications, and campaigns to promote a zero-injury mindset across all levels of the organization.
  • Collaborate with the workers’ compensation team on Axium cases.

Continuous Improvement

  • Leverage data analytics and benchmarking to identify trends and opportunities for improving transportation safety performance.
  • Implement technology solutions that enhance compliance monitoring, driver engagement, and incident prevention.
  • Foster a proactive safety culture that emphasizes accountability, ownership, and operational excellence.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Transportation, Logistics, or related field (Master’s preferred).
  • 8+ years of progressive safety leadership experience in transportation, petroleum hauling, or hazardous materials industries.
  • Strong knowledge of DOT/FMCSA regulations and driver qualification requirements.
  • Demonstrated success leading teams and driving measurable improvements in safety performance.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strategic thinker with strong leadership and team development skills.
  • Excellent communication, influencing, and relationship-building abilities.
  • Proficiency in safety management systems, compliance tracking tools, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to analyze data, identify trends, and develop action plans to reduce risk.
