Plant Environmental Control Engineer - Ford Motor Company, Kansas City, MO

About Ford

Ford Motor Company stands as a global leader in automotive innovation, powering the world’s transportation for over 120 years. From the iconic Model T to today’s cutting-edge electric vehicles like the F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E, Ford continues to shape mobility’s future. Our Kansas City Assembly Plant represents the heart of American manufacturing excellence, producing world-class trucks that drive economies and communities forward.

At Ford, sustainability isn’t just a buzzword—it’s embedded in our DNA. We’ve committed $22 billion to electric vehicles and eliminated single-use plastics from plants worldwide. As a Plant Environmental Control Engineer, you’ll play a pivotal role in our ambitious Planet Ford plan, reducing carbon emissions and pioneering circular economy practices in automotive manufacturing.

Role Overview

The Plant Environmental Control Engineer at Ford’s Kansas City facility safeguards our environmental footprint while ensuring operational excellence. You’ll oversee critical systems like wastewater treatment, air emissions control, and hazardous waste management, maintaining compliance with stringent EPA and Missouri Department of Natural Resources regulations.

This full-time position offers a unique opportunity to blend environmental science with heavy manufacturing. Reporting to the Environmental Manager, you’ll collaborate with production, maintenance, and quality teams to implement sustainable processes that minimize impact without compromising Ford’s legendary quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

Environmental System Management

Operate and optimize plant-wide environmental control systems, including multi-stage wastewater treatment plants, regenerative thermal oxidizers, and stormwater management infrastructure. Perform daily monitoring, predictive maintenance, and system troubleshooting to ensure 100% uptime and regulatory compliance.

Regulatory Compliance & Reporting

Prepare and submit comprehensive reports for Title V air permits, NPDES wastewater discharges, RCRA hazardous waste, and SPCC oil spill prevention. Conduct internal audits, interface with regulators during inspections, and develop corrective action plans to maintain Ford’s impeccable compliance record.

Pollution Prevention Initiatives

Lead cross-functional teams in identifying and eliminating waste streams at the source. Implement lean environmental projects that have delivered millions in cost savings across Ford facilities, from paint sludge minimization to volatile organic compound (VOC) capture improvements.

Training & Emergency Response

Develop and deliver environmental training programs for 2,000+ plant associates. Serve as subject matter expert during environmental incidents, coordinating spill response and root cause analysis to prevent recurrence.

Qualifications & Requirements

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related technical discipline
  • 3+ years of industrial environmental engineering experience, preferably in automotive or heavy manufacturing
  • Deep knowledge of federal (EPA), state (Missouri DNR), and local environmental regulations
  • Strong data analysis skills with proficiency in environmental monitoring software and SCADA systems

Preferred:

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Missouri
  • Experience with automotive manufacturing environmental controls
  • Hazardous waste management certification (CHMM)
  • Project management experience leading capital environmental projects

Benefits & Perks

Ford offers industry-leading compensation and comprehensive benefits:

  • Financial Wellness: Competitive salary ($65,000–$95,000 estimated), annual bonus, 401(k) with 6% match, stock purchase plan
  • Health & Wellness: Medical, dental, vision with low premiums; on-site fitness center and wellness programs
  • Work-Life Balance: Generous PTO, paid holidays, flexible work arrangements
  • Professional Development: Tuition reimbursement up to $10,000/year, leadership training, tuition-free degree programs
  • Ford Perks: Exclusive employee pricing on vehicles, $1,000 annual vacation cash, on-site childcare

Career Growth

This role serves as a launchpad for environmental leadership at Ford. High performers advance to Plant Environmental Manager, Corporate Sustainability roles, or Global Environmental Engineering positions. Our Kansas City engineers have progressed to executive sustainability roles at Ford headquarters and supplier partners worldwide.

Ford invests heavily in talent development, offering rotations across electric vehicle battery plants, autonomous vehicle facilities, and international operations. Join a cohort where 85% of leadership positions are filled internally.
