Key Responsibilities

Financial Closing and Reporting

Support monthly, quarterly, and year-end closing processes to maintain accurate financial records. Prepare comprehensive work-in-progress (WIP) schedules, perform monthly WIP analyses, and execute necessary journal entries. Reconcile billed revenue to WIP reports and the general ledger, ensuring data integrity across all financial statements.

Project Cost Management

Track, analyze, and report on all project costs, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor expenses. Monitor budget versus actual costs diligently, investigating and resolving variances to prevent overruns. Collaborate with operations teams to develop accurate cost forecasts, enabling proactive decision-making on the job site.

Compliance and Revenue Recognition

Ensure precise revenue recognition in line with GAAP percentage-of-completion methodologies, a cornerstone of construction accounting. Approve purchase order requests, vendor bills, and project-related expenses while upholding internal controls. Provide essential support for both internal and external audits, including thorough reviews of job costs and contracts.

Required Qualifications

To excel in this Construction Accountant role, candidates should hold a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting paired with 2-5 years of relevant accounting experience, or demonstrate 5+ years of equivalent work experience in a related field. Preference is given to those with direct experience in the construction industry, where familiarity with job costing, WIP management, and project-based accounting is highly valued. Proficiency with construction-specific accounting software (such as Procore, Sage 300, or Viewpoint) is a significant plus, though not mandatory. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex financial data to non-finance stakeholders are essential. Knowledge of GAAP revenue recognition principles, particularly percentage-of-completion, is required.
