About the Role

As Controller, you will be the financial backbone of a distribution-focused company, overseeing all aspects of accounting, reporting, and controls. Reporting directly to executive leadership, you'll manage a team handling AP, AR, payroll, and inventory accounting while partnering with operations, sales, and supply chain. This hybrid position in Chicago, IL, emphasizes inventory accuracy, cash flow optimization, and driving ERP efficiencies in a business scaling through acquisitions. Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

• Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes with precision and timeliness.
• Prepare detailed financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow) and perform in-depth analysis.
• Ensure full compliance with GAAP and internal accounting policies.
• Lead support for annual audits and collaborate with tax advisors for seamless filings.

Inventory & Operational Finance

• Maintain accurate inventory valuation and cost accounting for distribution and own-branded manufacturing.
• Develop KPIs like inventory turns, fill rate, DSO, and DPO to monitor distribution efficiency.
• Implement controls for shrinkage, obsolescence, cycle counts, and year-end physical inventories.
• Ensure proper costing methods (standard cost, FIFO) and landed cost accuracy.
• Collaborate with operations on warehouse efficiency and cost-saving initiatives.

Planning, Cash Flow & Controls

• Lead annual budgeting, mid-year re-forecasts, and variance analysis in partnership with FP&A.
• Manage cash flow forecasting, daily liquidity, AR/AP processes, and collections strategies.
• Strengthen internal controls across procurement, receiving, inventory, and sales orders.
• Coordinate with external auditors and optimize ERP workflows for purchasing, inventory, and sales.
• Drive automation to enhance reporting accuracy and financial visibility.

Leadership & Strategic Support

• Supervise the accounting team (AP, AR, payroll, inventory) and foster professional growth.
• Partner with operations, sales, supply chain, and executives to support business expansion.
• Provide actionable financial insights for strategic decisions and M&A integrations.

Required Qualifications

To excel as Controller, candidates need:

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA/CMA strongly preferred.
• 8+ years in accounting, with 3+ years in controller or equivalent leadership roles.
• Deep experience in distribution/inventory sectors, including cost and inventory accounting.
• Proficiency in ERP systems and advanced Excel; automation mindset a plus.
• Strong leadership skills with proven team management success.
• Excellent communication for cross-functional collaboration and executive reporting.
• Hybrid work capability in Chicago, IL.
