About Role

Robert Half is proud to partner with a thriving family-owned business in Johnston, Iowa, to recruit for their first-ever Controller position. This is an exciting opportunity for a hands-on financial leader to join a close-knit team known for strong values, employee loyalty, and unwavering commitment to customers. As the company experiences rapid growth, they're seeking a strategic yet detail-oriented professional to establish structure in their financial operations. You'll build the accounting function from the ground up, implement robust processes, optimize their new ERP system, and lead a small team including an Accounting Clerk and administrative support. This role offers the perfect blend of autonomy, impact, and collaboration in a supportive small-business environment where your contributions will directly shape the company's future success.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

Maintain the general ledger with meticulous attention to compliance and completeness. Deliver actionable financial analysis to empower leadership decisions and drive business performance.

Process & Structure Development

Design and rollout accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls tailored to a growing operation. Create standardized workflows for critical functions like billing, accounts payable/receivable, expense processing, and payroll coordination. Proactively identify automation opportunities to boost efficiency and scalability.

Compliance & Strategic Support

Collaborate with external CPA firms on tax filings, audits, and year-end closeouts. Maintain full compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Support budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and ad-hoc projects in this versatile small-business setting.

Required Qualifications

To excel in this pivotal role, candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA, CMA certification, or equivalent hands-on experience is strongly preferred. Bring 5+ years of progressive accounting expertise, ideally from small business or family-owned settings where you've led month-end closes and crafted financial statements. Proven success building processes from scratch is essential, alongside proficiency in accounting systems—ERP implementation experience is a major plus. You thrive on analytical challenges, possess sharp attention to detail, and solve problems with creativity. A collaborative, roll-up-your-sleeves leadership style will set you apart in this team-oriented culture.
