Your day-to-day will involve a blend of advisory, transactional, and litigious work. Draft and negotiate employment agreements, severance packages, non-compete clauses, and employee handbooks to protect client interests. Provide proactive counsel on compliance with evolving employment laws, including ADA accommodations, FMLA leave, and workplace safety under OSHA. In litigation, you will manage cases from inception to resolution: prepare complaints and answers, conduct discovery, take depositions, file motions for summary judgment, and represent clients in arbitrations, mediations, or trials before state and federal courts. Building client trust is paramount—expect to engage in regular strategy sessions, deliver clear legal updates, and anticipate needs to prevent disputes. Collaborate with paralegals, associates, and partners to craft winning case theories backed by meticulous legal research using tools like Westlaw or LexisNexis. This role also includes staying abreast of legislative changes, such as recent updates to Michigan's paid sick leave laws, to offer cutting-edge advice.
To thrive, candidates must hold a Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and be admitted to the Michigan State Bar (federal bar experience a plus). We require at least 5-7 years of dedicated employment law practice, with proven litigation wins in employment matters. Key skills include expertise in employment litigation, client management, legal drafting, compliance counseling, deposition handling, and research analysis. Strong written and oral advocacy skills are essential, as is the ability to juggle multiple matters under tight deadlines.
