Job Description

About the Senior Database Administrator Role

Robert Half is partnering with a leading organization in Washington, District of Columbia, United States, to find an exceptional Senior Database Administrator (DBA). This critical full-time position oversees the installation, configuration, maintenance, security, and performance optimization of enterprise-grade databases across multiple platforms, including SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, and PostgreSQL. Whether on-premises or in the cloud (Azure, AWS), you'll ensure mission-critical data platforms deliver unparalleled reliability and efficiency.

As a Senior DBA, you'll drive automation, architectural planning, and operational excellence while collaborating with development, DevOps, and infrastructure teams. This role demands expertise in high-availability environments, query optimization, cloud migrations, and stringent security compliance—perfect for seasoned professionals passionate about database technology in dynamic, enterprise settings.

Key Responsibilities

Database Platform Administration

Take ownership of core database operations: Install and configure Microsoft SQL Server tools like SSMS, SSRS, SSIS, and SSAS. Set up new databases, servers, and infrastructure. Administer SQL Server clustering and replication for high availability. Manage large-scale MySQL and PostgreSQL environments, and maintain Oracle systems with RAC, Data Guard, OEM, and RMAN backups.

Performance, Reliability & Monitoring

Proactively monitor database health using SQL Profiler, Extended Events, Performance Monitor, OEM, and custom shell scripts. Analyze query execution plans, resolve deadlocks, optimize slow queries, perform index tuning, update statistics, and conduct consistency checks to ensure peak performance.

Upgrades, Migrations & Patching

Lead database upgrades, patching, and migrations, including seamless on-premises to Azure transitions. Manage Azure Managed Instances, AWS RDS, and EC2 databases. Execute DR testing, backups, restorations, and failover validation to minimize downtime.

Security & Compliance

Implement robust security protocols like Transparent Data Encryption (TDE), auditing, and access controls. Ensure adherence to STIG standards, encryption requirements, and regulatory compliance. Manage user accounts, roles, permissions, and audit trails meticulously.

Documentation, Reporting & Operational Support

Maintain detailed documentation including architecture diagrams, configuration baselines, and change logs. Generate insightful reports on performance metrics, growth trends, capacity planning, and resource utilization. Provide Tier 3 incident support, participate in on-call rotations, and troubleshoot platform-level issues.

Required Qualifications

To excel in this Senior Database Administrator role, you need 8+ years of hands-on experience in enterprise DBA environments. Key qualifications include deep expertise in SQL Server (SSMS, SSRS, SSIS, SSAS), Oracle (RAC, Data Guard, OEM, RMAN), and high-availability MySQL/PostgreSQL. Proficiency in cloud platforms like Azure Managed Instances and AWS RDS/EC2 is essential, along with proven skills in performance tuning, security (TDE, STIG), migrations, and monitoring tools.

Strong problem-solving abilities, automation scripting, and experience with on-call support are required. A bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field is preferred, plus relevant certifications (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator, Oracle OCP).
