Responsibilities

  • Utilize the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, outcomes/planning, implementation, and evaluation) to provide individualized nursing care to patients in the Emergency Department.
  • Collaborate with physicians and other inter-professional colleagues to plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
  • Demonstrate competency and practice within the full scope of nursing expertise/knowledge, adhering to age and population-specific standards.
  • Care for patients in all phases of preventative care, health maintenance, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up within the Emergency Department setting.
  • Plan and coordinate patient care, including assessment, education, triage, and various nursing interventions.
  • Function within the scope and standards of nursing practice as outlined in the Nurse Practice Act and Administrative Rules of Minnesota.
  • Adhere to the Sanford Professional Nursing Practice, which recognizes the Scope and Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements as published by the American Nurses Association.
  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments, including physical, psychological, and social needs.
  • Establish nursing diagnoses based on assessment data and patient needs.
  • Develop individualized care plans in collaboration with patients and their families.
  • Implement nursing interventions according to the care plan, including medication administration, wound care, and other treatments.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of nursing interventions and revise the care plan as needed.
  • Document patient care accurately and completely in the electronic health record.
  • Triage patients according to established protocols and guidelines.
  • Administer medications safely and accurately, following established policies and procedures.
  • Monitor patients for adverse reactions to medications and treatments.
  • Provide patient and family education regarding diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.
  • Ensure patient safety by implementing appropriate safety measures and protocols.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment for patients and staff.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care.
  • Respond to emergency situations and provide immediate medical care.
  • Collaborate with other members of the healthcare team to ensure continuity of care.
  • Delegate tasks to other healthcare professionals as appropriate.
  • Maintain professional licensure and certifications.
  • Attend continuing education programs to enhance knowledge and skills.
