Role Overview

Join MongoDB as a Senior Staff Engineer, Server Networking & Observability and become a foundational architect of the world's leading modern developer data platform. The Networking & Observability Team builds low-overhead infrastructure powering communication between MongoDB Server nodes, clients, and services. Operating at the bottom of the stack, you'll have massive impact on MongoDB database performance and robustness.

Recent projects include POCs for ultra-performant RPC stack architecture and OpenTelemetry integration to accelerate diagnosis of performance issues and test failures. This role offers Seattle, Washington or New York City, New York office locations, plus full remote work across North America. Champion inclusivity, diversity, and collaboration while applying low-level systems and networking expertise to build the fastest, most reliable, exceptionally observable NoSQL database.

Key Responsibilities at MongoDB

  • Lead architecture of low-level networking components driving MongoDB Server performance, scalability, cost-efficiency, and resiliency
  • Design observability improvements enabling MongoDB engineers and customers to quickly diagnose production issues using modern OpenTelemetry standards
  • Handle customer escalations from Technical Support on networking issues and coach teammates to resolve complex production problems
  • Write production C++ code for the database core, improve existing codebase, and mentor engineers to elevate code quality
  • Own team codebase ensuring highest standards for security, durability, availability, performance, and maintainability
  • Develop comprehensive tests in C++, JavaScript, and Python demonstrating correctness and preventing regressions
  • Diagnose and fix test failures, production bugs, and performance regressions across MongoDB distributed systems
  • Lead major initiatives collaborating across engineering teams and advising Product Management on technical roadmaps
  • Interview top talent and drive the technical vision for MongoDB's networking and observability infrastructure

Qualifications & Requirements

To succeed as a Senior Staff Engineer at MongoDB, you'll need:

  • 12+ years experience programming, debugging, performance tuning distributed C/C++ systems
  • Expert systems fundamentals: multi-threaded programming, performance profiling, network programming mastery
  • Database internals experience or building core data processing system components
  • Observability expertise including OpenTelemetry and industry best practices
  • Exceptional communication skills with proven mentorship and collaboration experience
  • Proven project leadership with realistic cost/complexity assessment abilities
