Job Description

Site Reliability Engineer (Senior or Staff), Fabric at MongoDB

Join MongoDB's Fabric team as a Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) and build the backbone of our multi-cloud network infrastructure. MongoDB, the modern developer data platform powering the AI era, seeks networking experts to ensure secure, scalable communication across our globally distributed MongoDB Atlas services.

Role Overview

The Fabric team within Platform Engineering manages critical infrastructure enabling secure system communication and public internet connectivity. You'll architect network solutions, implement service mesh technologies, and optimize edge load balancing to protect customer data in transit. This senior SRE role requires deep expertise in distributed systems and networking fundamentals, supporting MongoDB's multi-cloud Kubernetes infrastructure across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud.

As a key player in SRE at MongoDB, you'll contribute to the most widely available globally distributed database platform, serving nearly 60,000 customers including 75% of the Fortune 100. Work on cutting-edge challenges in multi-cloud networking, service mesh implementation, and high-availability systems that power AI-native applications and modern workloads.

Key Responsibilities at MongoDB

  • Develop and maintain a reliable, resilient multi-cloud globally-connected network infrastructure crucial for all MongoDB services
  • Collaborate closely with service-owning engineering teams to provide internal support and resolve complex technical connectivity issues
  • Offer expert guidance on best practices for service-to-service connectivity and network architecture design
  • Participate in 24/7 on-call rotation to swiftly address network and service mesh disruptions ensuring 99.99%+ availability
  • Design and implement advanced networking solutions including BGP, tunnels, overlays, and SDN principles
  • Architect service mesh and load balancing systems optimized for multi-cloud environments (AWS, Azure, GCP)
  • Automate all operational processes eliminating manual "ops work" through infrastructure-as-code practices
  • Enhance observability, alerting, and monitoring systems specifically for networking and connectivity layers
  • Drive efficiency improvements benefiting end-user experience and platform reliability

Qualifications & Requirements

  • 6+ years experience operating distributed systems with deep networking expertise: TCP/IP (IPv6), DNS, TLS/mTLS, BGP, tunnels, overlays, SDN principles
  • Intimate familiarity with cloud networking primitives in AWS (VPCs, subnetting, Direct Connect), Azure (Virtual Networks, Private Link), or GCP (VPC, Cloud Interconnect)
  • Strong knowledge of service mesh technologies (Istio, Linkerd) and advanced load balancing concepts
  • Proven customer-focused approach driving measurable improvements in user experience
  • "Allergic to ops work" - strong preference for automation, infrastructure-as-code, and self-service systems
  • Experience with Kubernetes networking, multi-cloud deployments, and global CDN optimization

Salary & Benefits

MongoDB offers competitive compensation for Senior/Staff SRE roles ranging from $160,000 - $260,000 USD base salary plus equity, bonuses, and comprehensive benefits. Total compensation varies by experience, location, and seniority.

  • Competitive equity packages with stock options/RSUs
  • MongoDB University - unlimited access to world-class training and certifications
  • Global Family Leave and generous parental leave policies
  • Comprehensive wellness programs including mental health support
  • Fertility assistance and family planning benefits
  • Employee affinity groups fostering diversity and inclusion
  • Flexible work arrangements - office or remote in select locations
  • 401k matching, health insurance, and unlimited PTO
