Job Description

Site Reliability Engineer (Senior or Staff), Observability at MongoDB

Role Overview

Join MongoDB's SRE Observability team as a Senior or Staff Site Reliability Engineer and become a key architect of the observability stack powering the world's leading NoSQL database platform. Our Platform Engineering organization builds and maintains the critical metrics, logging, and tracing infrastructure used by all MongoDB engineering teams worldwide.

Working with cutting-edge tools like VictoriaMetrics, Splunk, QuickWit, Jaeger, Fluentbit, and Vector, you'll own the telemetry pipeline and monitoring infrastructure that ensures MongoDB's services remain resilient at global scale. This hybrid NYC HQ or fully remote role (Eastern/Central time zones) offers you the chance to collaborate with top SRE and SWE teams while driving observability best practices across the organization.

MongoDB's modern developer data platform powers 75% of Fortune 100 companies and AI-native startups. Your work will directly impact the reliability of MongoDB Atlas—the only globally distributed, multi-cloud database available across AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure.

Key Responsibilities at MongoDB

  • Define the strategic vision and standards for MongoDB's mission-critical observability platform used by all engineering teams
  • Design, architect, build, and deliver core observability services in collaboration with stakeholders
  • Implement and troubleshoot global monitoring solutions spanning multiple cloud providers and regions
  • Build infrastructure for maximum reliability, resilience, fault tolerance, and self-healing capabilities
  • Identify and configure key metrics and alerts to proactively detect incidents and measure service health
  • Participate in week-long on-call rotation with blameless post-mortem processes
  • Continuously improve observability capabilities, optimizing for cost efficiency, developer experience, and maintainability
  • Partner with SWE and SRE teams to implement observability best practices for microservices instrumentation
  • Drive innovation in MongoDB's telemetry pipeline and monitoring infrastructure

Qualifications & Requirements

To succeed in this role, you'll need proven experience in large-scale systems and observability:

  • 5+ years running mission-critical services at scale in production environments
  • Expertise in observability for distributed systems (metrics, logging, tracing)
  • Deep understanding of information security principles and secure infrastructure design
  • Proficiency in at least one modern programming language (Go, Python, Java, Rust) beyond scripting
  • Strong knowledge of web protocols and standards (HTTP/2, TLS 1.3, DNS, gRPC)
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent hands-on experience

Nice to haves: Experience with AWS/Google Cloud/Azure, Kubernetes cluster management, and working in fast-paced SaaS environments.

Salary & Benefits

MongoDB offers competitive compensation for Senior/Staff SRE roles ranging from $180,000 - $280,000 base salary plus equity, depending on experience and location. Total compensation includes:

  • Competitive equity package with significant upside potential
  • MongoDB University for ongoing technical training
  • Global Family Leave and generous parental leave
  • Comprehensive wellness programs and fertility assistance
  • 401(k) matching and financial planning benefits
  • Unlimited PTO and flexible work arrangements
  • Professional development stipend and conference budget
