Atlas Search is MongoDB's multi-cloud service powering complex full-text and vector search queries using the powerful MongoDB Query Language. Our distributed systems handle the complete lifecycle of search indexes—from data ingestion and index building to partitioning, performance optimization, availability, and backup management.

Key Responsibilities at MongoDB
- Design, implement, and support projects that dramatically improve Atlas Search scalability for the largest customer workloads
- Develop cloud-based distributed systems managing search index lifecycle including data ingestion pipelines
- Optimize index building processes, intelligent partitioning, and high-performance query execution
- Enhance system availability, reliability, and backup management for mission-critical search infrastructure
- Collaborate closely with engineering teams prioritizing sound technical decisions and customer-focused architecture
- Lead engineering projects and own critical subsystems within the Atlas Search platform
- Provide strategic input shaping the team's technical roadmap and system architecture evolution
- Conduct code reviews, participate actively in technical discussions, and drive process improvements
- Monitor production systems and implement enhancements for enterprise-grade performance
Qualifications & Requirements
Successful Software Engineer 3 candidates demonstrate:
- 2+ years hands-on experience designing, building, testing, and maintaining industrial-strength backend software in complex, large-scale codebases
- Deep expertise developing distributed systems and high-performance multithreaded applications
- Strong proficiency with modern statically typed languages; particular interest in Java development for backend systems
- Exceptional technical communication skills—both verbal and written—for cross-team collaboration
