Key Responsibilities at Rivian

As a senior contributor, you'll own the architecture and implementation of mission-critical features. Key responsibilities include:

• Design and develop high-performance background services and applications within the Android Automotive OS ecosystem
• Architect solutions ensuring minimal impact on system performance, memory, and power in constrained environments
• Debug and optimize complex bottlenecks using Kotlin, Java, and C++ in multi-threaded scenarios
• Implement Protocol Buffers (Protobuf) for efficient, structured data transport across vehicle systems
• Collaborate cross-functionally with product managers, UI/UX designers, data scientists, and mechanical engineers
• Drive code quality through rigorous reviews, CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI, Bazel), and comprehensive testing
• Scope future features for the Vehicle Health Monitor across Rivian vehicle programs
• Lead development with deadline-driven mentality and minimal supervision
• Influence multidisciplinary teams including external partners to deliver production-ready software

Qualifications & Requirements

Rivian seeks proven senior engineers ready to tackle automotive-grade Android challenges:

• BS/MS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent technical degree
• 3-5+ years shipping complex, production-quality Android applications
• Expertise in Kotlin, Java, C++ with deep Android OS internals knowledge
• Advanced Kotlin Coroutines/Flows experience handling streaming data, backpressure, and structured concurrency
• Embedded systems optimization expertise in multithreading and resource-constrained environments
• Inter-process communication and Protobuf contracts implementation experience
• Networking protocols knowledge (TCP/IP, UDP)
• CI/CD mastery with GitLab CI, Bazel, multi-repo structures, and build troubleshooting

Bonus qualifications: Automotive/consumer electronics experience, Android UI frameworks, React Native, vehicle protocols (CAN, Ethernet, UDS).
