  • Participate in equipment buy-offs at vendor sites and Rivian's Normal factory for FAT, SAT, and safety validations.
  • Develop controls standards by incorporating project lessons-learned to streamline future implementations.
  • Drive production improvements by reducing cycle times, minimizing downtime, and boosting quality metrics.
  • Maintain and version control PLC programs, HMI configurations, safety systems, and documentation.
  • Troubleshoot and enhance PLC code using Ladder Logic and Structured Text for reusable, maintainable solutions.
  • Optimize HMIs for intuitive operation and advanced troubleshooting capabilities.
  • Implement MES integrations for real-time production and performance tracking.
  • Design and validate ANSI/RIA15.06/OSHA-compliant safety systems for conveyors, robots, and gantries.
  • Train production and maintenance teams on equipment operations and HMI diagnostics.
  • Manage network devices, fieldbus protocols like Ethernet/IP, EtherCAT, and Profinet.

Qualifications & Requirements

To succeed in this role, you need proven expertise in industrial automation. Rivian seeks candidates with:

  • 3-5 years of Controls Engineering experience or equivalent in high-volume manufacturing.
  • BS/MS in Electrical Engineering or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Hands-on commissioning of manufacturing equipment including PLCs, HMIs, and robots.
  • In-depth knowledge of safety standards (ANSI/RIA15.06, OSHA) and electrical standards (NFPA79, NEC, UL508A).
  • Advanced IEC 61131-3 programming with Rockwell, Siemens, or Beckhoff PLCs.
  • Experience building HMI projects with FactoryTalk View, WinCC, Ignition, or TwinCAT HMI.
  • Preferred: 6-axis robot programming (Fanuc, ABB, Kawasaki) and MES interfacing.
