Job Description

Role Overview

Join Rivian's Sensing Systems Team as a Sr. Electronic Design Engineer and become a core contributor to the architecture, development, deployment, and optimization of advanced sensing systems. This deeply technical, hands-on role focuses on safety-critical features for Rivian's autonomous electric adventure vehicles. You'll ensure cameras, radars, and LiDARs perform reliably under real-world conditions, driving innovation in ADAS technology at the forefront of the EV revolution.

Rivian is redefining automotive engineering with emissions-free vehicles built for adventure. Our Palo Alto team challenges conventional thinking, reframing problems and pioneering solutions in unknown territories. If you thrive in diverse, collaborative environments with a passion for the outdoors, this Sr. Electronic Design Engineer, Sensing Systems position offers unparalleled impact.

Key Responsibilities at Rivian

As a key player in Rivian's Sensing Systems Team, you'll own critical aspects of sensor integration and validation. Here's what you'll do daily:

  • Lead hardware integration and validation of all ADAS sensors (camera, radar, LiDAR) into prototype and production vehicle platforms.
  • Define and own sensor SW interfaces, including Ethernet/MIPI/CAN frame formats and PTP timesync protocols.
  • Develop sensor firmware and execute bring-up processes with comprehensive functional validation and failure analysis.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with perception, controls, and embedded software teams to guarantee sensor data integrity.
  • Create system-level test plans covering lab validation, vehicle-level testing, and environmental stress screening (thermal, vibration, EMI/EMC).
  • Optimize sensor calibration processes for static/dynamic alignment and multi-modal sensor fusion readiness.
  • Drive issue triage across HW, FW, and mechanical domains using rigorous, data-driven methodologies.
  • Support supplier management from selection through bring-up, including root cause analysis for field failures.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation including integration specs, test artifacts, and interface controls.

This role demands strong problem-solving and demands you'll deliver end-to-end solutions that power Rivian's autonomous driving capabilities.

Qualifications & Requirements

To succeed as Rivian's Sr. Electronic Design Engineer, Sensing Systems, you need:

  • Academic Foundation: Bachelor’s or Master’s in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Programming Expertise: Expert Python proficiency; strong C++ for performance-critical production code; system optimization and robust engineering practices.
  • Protocol Mastery: Deep knowledge of CAN, Ethernet, SPI, MIPI interfaces, and synchronization (PTP, PPS).
  • Test Equipment Fluency: Experience with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power analyzers, vehicle data loggers, and network analyzers.
  • Sensor Systems Knowledge: Understanding of sensor fusion algorithms, alignment impacts, timing, data integrity, modeling, and simulation tools.
  • Preferred Experience: Hands-on automotive/robotics sensor integration (camera/radar/LiDAR), deep learning frameworks (PyTorch/TensorFlow), vehicle on-road validation.

Exceptional communication and cross-team collaboration skills are essential. Rivian seeks curious, courageous engineers who deliver results across technical boundaries.

Salary & Benefits

Competitive Compensation: Palo Alto-based applicants earn $132,000 - $165,000 annually, determined by experience and qualifications. This reflects Rivian's commitment to fair pay in the competitive EV/autonomous vehicle market.

Comprehensive Benefits Package:

  • Medical, Rx, dental, vision insurance starting day one for full-time employees
  • Part-time coverage after 90 days
  • Family coverage including spouse/domestic partner and children up to 26
  • Equal opportunity employer with accessibility accommodations
