Role Overview

We're seeking a Staff Manufacturing Engineer - Battery to lead the development of innovative battery manufacturing strategies, focusing on pack assembly conveyance and material flow. This critical role spans from initial concept through full-scale production, contributing to prototype development, validation builds, and robust manufacturing systems.

Based at our state-of-the-art facilities in Social Circle, GA, Atlanta, GA, Normal, IL, or Irvine, CA, you'll report to the Manufacturing Manager of Pack Assembly & Automation. This highly cross-functional position demands exemplary communication skills to balance product design and manufacturing objectives, ensuring scalable production of next-generation battery packs.

Key Responsibilities at Rivian

As a Staff Manufacturing Engineer - Battery at Rivian, you'll drive innovation across multiple domains:

  • Lead comprehensive material flow strategies for battery pack assembly, including interline conveyance, part presentation, dunnaging, NCM repair loops, and operator lifting aids from concept to production.
  • Drive inter-pack line conveyance innovation, standardizing high-speed systems to improve station-to-station transfer times.
  • Design standardized pallet docking systems for manual and automated stations, ensuring precise material transfer for high-precision applications.
  • Ensure full safety compliance for all conveyance systems, focusing on ingress/egress, turntables, safety guarding, and critical zones.
  • Lead Discrete Event Simulation (DES) to model, analyze, and optimize material flow, identifying bottlenecks and validating layouts.
  • Provide DFM feedback to Product Engineering on part design for efficient presentation, racking, and packaging.
  • Oversee NCM process flow, defining handling, storage, and transfer logistics for non-conforming materials.
  • Lead lift assist implementation, selecting and deploying ergonomic equipment for component transfers.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with manufacturing, engineering, and product teams to deliver scalable solutions.

Qualifications & Requirements

To succeed in this role, candidates must demonstrate:

  • Advanced degree: BS/MS/PhD in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or equivalent.
  • Extensive experience: 7+ years in automated manufacturing environments.
  • Hands-on expertise: Building/troubleshooting automation systems and experimental data acquisition.
  • Technical proficiency: Experience with AutoCAD, Solidworks, CATIA for 2D/3D design.
  • Proven track record: Transitioning systems from prototype to production.
  • Strong soft skills: Problem-solving under pressure, managing multiple projects, exemplary communication, and organizational skills.
  • Complex systems experience: Design of electro-mechanical systems.

Ability to travel domestically and internationally is required.
