Job Description

Tesla’s Bay Area Prototype Machine Shop is currently seeking a dedicated and skilled senior level CNC Mill-Turn Programmer to join the team and contribute to Tesla’s mission.The Prototype Machine Shop Team provides engineers and technicians across the organization with complex and critical machined components and assemblies to meet the most aggressive program objectives. Through close collaboration with a world-class team of fellow machinists, fabricators, engineers, and leadership, we enhance the design of systems and products from concept through production by bringing intangible ideas to the physical world. We contribute to a range of projects from concept and pre-production vehicles, energy systems, artificial intelligence, robotics, and other future-facing initiatives.As a Sr. CNC Mill-Turn Programmer on the Prototype Team, you will be a key contributor in our Gear Lab initiative. This specialized team works with Tesla’s outstanding Drive Systems and Materials Engineering teams to produce the world’s best electric propulsion systems. Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of 5-axis CNC Mill-Turn programming experience or demonstration of exceptional capability (experience, 10 years)
  • Gear manufacturing experience includes hard turning, grinding, hobbing, shaping, broaching, or skiving (experience)
  • Proficient in programming methods including G-code, conversational interfaces, and CAM (Siemens 840D and Esprit experience a plus) (experience)
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of engineering drawings, documents, and GD&T (experience)
  • Ability to efficiently set up and operate multiple work-centers simultaneously (experience)
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to develop and present technical information through verbal, email, text, phone, Microsoft Office suite, and other digital communication platforms (experience)
  • Self-driven with positive energy, attitude, and eagerness to learn, grow and teach others (experience)
  • Excellent mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, analytical skills and time management (experience)
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively both independently and as a team with minimal supervision (experience)
  • Flexible with the ability to work overtime on short notice based on strategic needs of the company (experience)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Siemens 840D and Esprit experience a plus (experience)

Responsibilities

  • Efficiently program, setup, and run 2-5 axis CNC Mill-Turn Lathes in a low-volume / high-mix workflow
  • Work directly with engineers to review designs, project requirements, and provide DFM feedback
  • Cut materials, build tooling, design and build fixtures, write, prove, and run programs at the machine, deburr and finish parts, measure and validate parts meet engineering specifications
  • Program and machine complex gears to tight tolerances in various materials with tight deadlines
  • Proactively track, document, and provide direct feedback with clear communication to management, engineers, and machinists on design, process, project status and outcomes with meticulous detail
  • Investigate, procure, test, and validate tooling, workholding, and software solutions for gear machining
  • Mentor junior machinists and programmers to improve competency across the shop
  • Identify, present, plan, and implement general shop improvements
  • Maintain shop equipment and keep your workplace clean and organized
  • Perform all assignments in a safe manner while adhering to security policies
