Job Description

Tesla is looking for a highly motivated Coatings Manufacturing Engineer to contribute to the development and deployment of manufacturing equipment and processes within our new Semi Manufacturing Factory located in Sparks, Nevada. The powertrain and energy product business segment are the heart of Tesla, and this is an exciting opportunity to work directly on the central challenge with the new Semi electric vehicles – improving cost and margins. Tesla is a demanding and fast-paced environment where you will work with a highly motivated team on extremely challenging projects. In addition to developing manufacturing equipment and processes, the Coatings Manufacturing Engineer will work closely with Production Engineering and Operations, Semi Design Engineering, Quality, Safety and internal/external integrators to install, upgrade and optimize automated manufacturing systems. This position will be responsible for managing the design, procurement, installation, and ramp of medium to large-scale manufacturing systems, as well as providing technical guidance for others.

Required Qualifications

  • 8 or more years of experience in a technology-based industry, where automated methods are utilized in the finishing/coating of consumer products (experience)
  • Experience working with or developing automotive paint and powder coating processes (experience)
  • Experience with developing, installing, and commissioning high-volume process equipment & automation systems, including pre-treatment, e-coat equipment, paint/powder application equipment, paint/powder booths, ovens, conveyors & robotics (experience)
  • Experience in developing, executing, and interpreting results of Design of Experiments (DOE) (experience)
  • Experience using industrial engineering methods in high-volume manufacturing processes (experience)
  • Proficient in using Catia, SolidWorks, Inventor, and/or AutoCAD & automation software (experience)
  • Proficient in the development and deployment of PFMEAs, new product introduction, and manufacturing operations (experience)
  • Degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Mechatronics, or Chemical Engineering, or equivalent experience (experience)

Responsibilities

  • Lead cross-functional collaboration and build relationships across the organization through coordination with other process, equipment, mechanical, electrical and support disciplines including project managers, manufacturing reps, and other stakeholders
  • Lead product design for manufacturability (DFM) and sustainability, including analysis of product design and identification of potential risks to the process and steering product design to the lowest overall cost (BOM & manufacturing cost)
  • Documentation of product requirements for process and equipment specification
  • Development of advanced processing technologies and equipment from concept to serial production
  • Detailed line design based on process requirements, throughput and OEE calculations
  • Lead process qualification, including development of acceptance testing criteria and verifying process/equipment meets requirements using statistical tools (such as GR&R, SPC and Cp/Cpk)
  • Management of large-scale projects for new programs, including the development of timing plans and cost breakdowns for executive approval, identification of risks to project timing driving corrective action, reporting of project status to executive team, and oversight of installation and commissioning of new manufacturing lines
