Job Description

The Senior Ergonomist will be a part of the EHS Engineering team, supporting the Tesla Semi Truck Factory and Gigafactory Nevada sites (multiple manufacturing facilities within three miles radius). This role will help implement, and continuously improve ergonomics and other EHS initiatives/programs within the Environment Health and Safety (EHS) Management System. While influencing future and current manufacturing systems, the Ergonomist is expected to skillfully apply quantitative and advanced risk assessment tools with a high degree of proficiency and demonstrate a clear understanding of function allocation (in the context of job design). Additionally, this individual will be expected to communicate recommendations brightly and briefly to employees at all levels in the company. The Ergonomist will support the management of change, champion for in-work system feedback loops, work to accommodate a wide range of people (both physically and mentally), and advocate for fatigue recovery in human-based work. On occasion, there will be a need to develop and deliver training content for EHS team members and other Tesla personnel.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Ergonomics and Human Factors, or equivalent experience (experience)
  • Associate Ergonomics Professional (AEP) certification through the Board of Certification in Professional Ergonomics (BCPE) or similar certifications preferred (certification)
  • Minimum 5 years industrial or related work experience, and at least 3 years leading ergonomic programs for design and continuous improvement (experience, 5 years)
  • Well organized with meticulous attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, ability to make independent decisions, self-motivated, and proactive in EHS approach (i.e., Ability to problem-solve equipment design to achieve prevention of acute safety injuries) (experience)
  • Ability to inspire confidence in multiple layers of management from executive to engineering levels, as the face of your program; ambassador of the EHS brand when interacting with front line workers (experience)
  • An understanding of lean manufacturing concepts and awareness of ergonomics and Digital Human Modelling (experience)
  • Proficiency in digital communications required (Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) (experience)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate Ergonomics Professional (AEP) certification through the Board of Certification in Professional Ergonomics (BCPE) or similar certifications preferred (certification)

Responsibilities

  • Manage ergonomics program elements across multiple products/ programs in various stages of development including design, installation and production
  • Problem solves for high impact risk mitigations while effectively collaborating with cross-functional teams, including, Engineering, Controls, Production, Design, Quality and Test teams
  • Drive design and/or workplace solutions with focus on human work-task interaction, leveraging risk assessments, design specifications and/or relevant research where applicable
  • Conduct measurements of physical task parameters (Including the use of, but not all inclusively; tape measure, scales, stopwatch, & force gauges) and to analyze conformance to the appropriate ergonomic specification or target
  • Advise changes in policies, procedures, work environment and equipment to prevent incidents and illnesses and to overall enable healthy human high performance; and coach/ mentor/ train others in ergonomics engineering and work system safety design
  • Implement and support EHS KPI compliance throughout areas of ownership
  • Participate in (occasionally lead) incident analysis to determine and make visible injury and near miss root causes, including corrective and preventative fixes, following the hierarchy of controls, to prevent incident reoccurrence
