Job Description

Tesla is seeking a Vision Systems Engineer to drive the development and deployment of inline Machine Vision Inspection Systems across battery cell component supplier manufacturing lines. You will lead inspection system development, system integration, image/data processing, and production deployment to ensure reliable detection and interpretation of defects in cell components such as separators, foils, and cathode/anode electrodes. This role sits at the intersection of manufacturing, metrology, and data science. You will bridge teams across production, process, quality, and equipment engineering to deliver solutions that directly improve the manufacturing of Tesla’s cell materials.

Required Qualifications

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or equivalent experience (experience)
  • 5+ years of experience with inline industrial vision and inspection systems in high-volume and high-speed (> 50m/min) roll-to-roll manufacturing (experience, 5 years)
  • Proven track record in sensor and camera selection, optical/lighting design, and vision system integration (experience)
  • Strong computer science background in image processing, ML anomaly detection, and large-scale data processing (experience)
  • Experience deploying vision systems on production lines, including PLC/automation integration, and metrology qualification (experience)
  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and ability to apply them towards manufacturing process development (experience)
  • Ability to travel, ~35% (experience)

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, qualify, and deploy machine vision systems for supplier manufacturing lines, including robot guidance and vision-based process control systems
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with manufacturing, quality, automation, and process teams to develop requirements and solutions for supplier inline vision inspection systems, while ensuring alignment and adoption
  • Develop and optimize image processing and ML pipelines to detect known defects and discover new anomalies
  • Translate raw image data (vision) into metrology insights that drive process understanding and control
  • Deploy and validate systems on pilot and production lines, including calibration, MSA, and troubleshooting
  • Develop best practices to improve vision system reliability, including process discipline, recipe version control, and system backup
  • Develop vision software and algorithms using programming languages such as C++, C#, Python, or HALCON
