The Thales Defence Mission Systems Domain is a leading provider of integrated mission solutions to surface ships and submarines, and is the No.1 Naval fleet support and technical services company in Australia. It is also a specialist in the upgrade of naval vessels providing systems and platforms integration capabilities. The Project Engineer (PE) will work as part of a team of engineers, technicians and production staff involved in the In Service Support (ISS) of COLLINS class submarines.

KEY ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
As a Project Engineer, you are accountable for:

  • Preparing and monitoring Bid/Project integrated schedule, budget, baselines, risks and opportunities.
  • Coordinating input from suppliers, partners and oversees subcontractors.
  • Preparing and presenting all internal and customer reporting requirements.
  • Monitor KPI’s and conduct analysis to provide early alert to the business of all significant emerging variances and risks.
  • Initiate, plan, execute, monitor and close engineering tasks for the Scylla ISS project
  • Develop and continuously improve visual management systems for engineering activities
  • Coordinating the refurbishment and STW of electronic, electro-mechanical and mechanical assemblies / arrays for the submarine sonar.
  • Providing timely resolution to all Non-Conformance Reports (NCR).
  • Providing technical / engineering advice and support to members of the Scylla ISS team, seeking Design Authority (DA) approval for changes where required.
  • Management of HSE responsibilities including the creation and update of JSEAs and risk assessments. Proactively participate in and promote a positive HSE culture.
  • Facilitating the continuous improvement of Lean systems and processes within the group.
  • The definition, implementation, optimisation and continuous improvement of engineering task and refurbishment processes and associated documentation including process control, plant and tooling for Engineering and refurbishment activities.
  • Utilising Thales’s configuration and inventory management systems to document engineering work and control inventory as required.
  • Initiate and execute 5S activities to maintain Engineering and production areas at a high standard.

KEY KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
To be successful in your role, you will have demonstrated and/or acquired the following knowledge and experience:

  • Degree qualified in business, engineering, project management or other suitable discipline.
  • Ability to secure IPMA certification.
  • High level of interpersonal and verbal communication skills as well as the ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Exceptional written communication skills including authoring content and edi ting.
  • Strong customer focus and external relationship management.
  • Demonstrated combination of technical and leadership skills.
  • Good initiative, self-management and planning skills.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE

  • Knowledge of, and experience with, sonar systems.
  • Experience with, or knowledge of, LEAN or other continuous improvement.
  • Knowledge of, and experience in the defence environment and military documentation standards.
  • Experience as a project engineer in an electronics / mechanical engineering environment.
