Located in the heart of Minneapolis, Minnesota, you'll enjoy a vibrant city known for its lakes, arts scene, and thriving tech community, all while contributing to a mission that aligns faith, finance, and purpose.

Role Description

The Application Engineer - Asset Management at Thrivent creates and maintains software applications to meet critical business needs in our dynamic asset management division. This role involves planning, analysis, design, developing/coding, testing, implementation, and maintenance of application components or subsystems within larger systems. Working in a collaborative team environment, you'll focus on delivering robust, scalable solutions that support our clients' financial goals.

This position is ideal for a skilled engineer passionate about financial technology (FinTech), agile development, and making a meaningful impact. You'll support proprietary and vendor applications, ensuring seamless integration and high availability for asset management operations. With a focus on innovation and reliability, you'll play a key role in enhancing our platforms that manage investments, portfolios, and client data securely and efficiently.

Detailed Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive support for business applications (proprietary and/or vendor applications), including enhancement and new development work on projects, upgrades to existing systems, routine maintenance, and support activities.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation to deliver 24x7 support for existing systems, ensuring minimal downtime and high reliability.
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment with business resources and other application engineers, utilizing established agile methodologies and tools to identify, verify, and document technical features that support business-driven technology solutions.
  • Collaborate with application engineers and architects to ensure affected application components function appropriately, data impacts are considered, and change management processes are followed rigorously.
  • Develop, integrate, test, debug, and document application components using a variety of technologies, handling moderately complex challenges with precision.
  • Install application components by following implementation and verification procedures to guarantee successful system deployments.
  • Mentor junior Application Engineers, fostering skill development and knowledge sharing within the team to build a stronger engineering culture.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, optimizing asset management applications for performance, security, and scalability in a fast-paced FinTech environment.

Required Skills

To excel in this role, you'll bring a blend of technical prowess and business acumen tailored to asset management:

  • Proficiency in development languages such as Java, C#, Python, or similar.
  • Strong experience with agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban) and tools like Jira or Azure DevOps.
  • Expertise in vendor package implementation and system integration (e.g., APIs, middleware).
  • Knowledge of database management (SQL Server, Oracle) and data modeling.
  • Skills in software testing, debugging, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) and microservices architecture.
  • Understanding of financial systems, asset management principles, and regulatory compliance (e.g., SEC rules).
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail in high-stakes environments.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems (MIS), Business, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of technical experience in software development, preferably in financial services or asset management.
  • Demonstrated experience with development languages, tools, and structures.
  • Proven track record in vendor package implementation and integration projects.
  • Business knowledge specific to asset management or financial services is highly desirable.

We value diverse experiences and encourage applications from candidates with equivalent professional certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Developer, Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer) or bootcamp completions in lieu of traditional degrees.
