Role Description

As a Staff Engineer at Thrivent, you will join a dynamic team focused on transforming and integrating complex brokerage and financial data across our digital ecosystem. You'll collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, supporting both production systems and new product development. Our team is at the forefront of ingesting, transforming, and making financial data available for enterprise-wide consumption. Utilizing a modern tech stack including AWS, Python, Java, APIs, and ETL tools, you'll drive enhancements, mentor peers, and ensure solutions are scalable, reliable, and aligned with Thrivent’s long-term vision. Success in this role involves adapting to evolving business needs, partnering with IT leadership and stakeholders, and championing best practices in Agile, DevOps, and system reliability. Your expertise in data engineering, particularly with brokerage data and vendor APIs from Fidelity, Schwab, and Investnet, will be crucial. Detailed Responsibilities

Designing Solutions

• Apply expert industry knowledge and broad understanding of multiple disciplines with technical knowledge to drive outcomes for customers.
• Work and problem-solve independently on initiatives that align to the broader software engineering strategy.
• Design systems and software integration patterns across a diverse software engineering ecosystem, ensuring alignment with high-level engineering goals and business initiatives.

Developing Software

• Use independent, critical thinking to solve complex problems significant to the customer, informed by application and system data as well as past experiences.
• Lead as a technical expert; develop the most architecturally impactful components of solutions.
• Identify, incorporate, and define development frameworks and libraries useful to the product.

Learning and Applying New Techniques

• Seek out industry and technology knowledge along with best practices to share with the team.

Collaborating within the Team

• Coordinate design and integration of the entire system, including subsystems; research and recommend technologies to improve current systems.
• Participate in team collaboration sessions to provide technical expertise, solve problems, and remove technical roadblocks.
• Contribute to product planning and implementation, helping product owners prioritize and execute.
• Mentor junior engineers, foster knowledge sharing, and promote a culture of continuous improvement.
• Ensure solutions meet security, compliance, and performance standards in financial services.

Required Skills

Thrivent seeks a Staff Engineer with deep expertise in the following areas:

• Advanced proficiency in Python and Java for data processing and application development.
• Expertise in AWS cloud services for scalable data infrastructure.
• Strong experience with ETL tools and data pipelines for financial data ingestion.
• Deep knowledge of brokerage data integration and vendor APIs (Fidelity, Schwab, Investnet).
• Proficiency in designing RESTful APIs and microservices architectures.
• Hands-on experience with Agile, DevOps practices, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Skills in database management (SQL/NoSQL) and data modeling for financial systems.
• Ability to mentor teams and drive technical strategy.

Education & Experience

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; Master’s preferred.

Experience:

• 8+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 5 years in data engineering or financial systems.
• Proven track record working with brokerage platforms and financial APIs.
• Experience in enterprise environments, leading complex projects to production.
• Demonstrated leadership in mentoring and technical decision-making.
